ILFORD celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2004 and as one of the major players in the imaging sector
wanted to honour the genre of Photography. The opportunity to become a partner for the Exhibition
‘Marilyn and Friends’ and to acclaim the photography of Sam and Larry Shaw gave ILFORD just such
an opportunity.
Our thanks go to the Shaw Family for allowing ILFORD to be a partner for the Exhibition and giving us
all the opportunity to share in the beauty and poignancy of this collection of images. In addition, the
Shaw Family, have given ILFORD permission to use a selection of the images to create a beautiful
Calendar for 2005 and for this we extend our gratitude and thanks.

ILFORD wollte zu Ihrem 125 Jubiläum die Photographie ehren. Die Möglichkeit die Ausstellung
"Marilyn and Friends" als Partner zu unterstützen und dabei das photographische Werk von Sam und
Larry Shaw gebührend zu würdigen war geradezu eine ideale Gelegenheit dazu. Für diese
Partnerschaft und für die ausserordentliche und ergreifende Sammlung von Bildern möchten wir der
Familie Shaw herzlich danken. Der Kalender für 2005 mit einer Auswahl dieser wunderbaren Bilder
war nur dank dieser grosszügigen Partnerschaft möglich.

ILFORD a célébré son 125e anniversaire en 2004. En tant qu'acteur dans le domaine de l'imagerie,
nous avons voulu honorer la photographie. Une telle occasion nous a été donnée grâce au partenariat
avec la famille Shaw et avec l'exposition "Marilyn and Friends". La célébration de ces images réalisées
par Sam et Larry Shaw a permis de mettre en évidence ce travail photographique dans toute sa
splendeur. Nous remercions la famille Shaw de nous avoir associés à cette collection d'images
extraordinaires et poignantes ainsi que pour l'autorisation d'utiliser une sélection d'images pour créer
un calendrier ILFORD 2005 exceptionnel.

L’image photographique n'est pas une forme de
compromis entre l'idée d'une image et les limites des
possibilités techniques. Le tirage est le fruit du concours de
deux créations visant le même but: reproduire l'image telle
quelle fut conçue par l'auteur et sublimer son message.
ILFORD, un des acteurs majeurs du secteur de l'imagerie
n'a cessé de développer son expérience jusqu'à maîtriser
l'ensemble des technologies de l'image. Pour célébrer ces
images partiellement inédites, ILFORD a tenu à rendre
hommage aux photographes Sam et Larry Shaw en
acceptant de devenir le partenaire de leur exposition
“Marilyn et ses amis”. Celle-ci est aussi le témoin d'une
transition de culture photographique où la couleur prit
l'ascendant sur le noir et blanc. Dans ce contexte,
l'ILFOCHROME est un support idéal. Il permet de puiser
sans limite dans les particularités de sa structure pour
obtenir des résultats sans compromis cela étant valable
également pour les tirages noir et blanc effectués sur du
Multigrade baryté.
Sam Shaw (1912-1999), rendu célèbre dans les années
40 par ses reportages à travers l'Amérique profonde, a
signé des couvertures prestigieuses tels que Life et Look
durant les années cinquante ; il aborda ensuite le cinéma
avec l'extraordinaire portrait de Marlon Brando dans "un
tramway nommé désir". En 1951 il découvre une
débutante sur les plateaux hollywoodiens, Marilyn
Monroe. Il ne la quittera plus, fasciné par le rayonnement
extraordinaire de cette femme ; il ne cessera de la
façonner et de la modeler pour mieux révéler sa beauté.
En tant que conseiller de Billy Wilder dans le film "Sept ans
de réflexion", il suggère la fameuse séquence de la jupe
soulevée par l'air chaud du métro dans Lexington avenue.
Dès lors les portraits de Marilyn se succèdent à côté des
images de Paul Newman, Ingrid Bergman, Sophia Loren,
Elizabeth Taylor et tant d'autres. Toutes ces images en
grande partie inconnues nous sont révélées aujourd'hui.
Sam Shaw travailla étroitement avec son fils Larry (1937).
Dès 1958 ce fut une entreprise commune qui les réunit.
Certaines images ne peuvent d'ailleurs plus être attribuées
à coup sûr, tellement les styles sont semblables. Les
archives de la famille Shaw sont le témoignage exemplaire
d'une époque et d'une culture cinématographique et
photographique.
L'immagine non è mai un compromesso tra la fotografia
che il fotografo vuole realizzare ed i limiti delle possibilità

necessità di garantirne la durata nel tempo e la possibilità
di essere conservata a lungo.
Ilford, uno dei protagonisti principali nel settore
dell'Imaging, non ha mai smesso di accrescere la sua
esperienza sviluppando le competenze per gestire
l'insieme delle diverse tecnologie dell'immagine. Per
celebrare queste immagine parzialmente inedite, Ilford ha
tenuto a rendere ommaggio ai fotografi Sam e Larry Shaw
accetando di diventare il partner nella loro mostra Marilyn
e i suoi amici. E stato per questa occazione un testimone
della transizione della cultura fotografica dove la
fotografia a colori ha preso acendente sulla fotografia
tradizionale bianco&nero. In questo contesto, Ilfochrome
è un materiale ideale. Grazie alla particolorità della sua
struttura, offre possibilità illimitate per ottenere risultati
senza compromessi, anche valide stampando le immagini
bianco&nero realizzate su carta baritata Multigrade.
Sam Shaw (1912-1999) fino dagli anni 1940, diventa
famoso per le sue inchieste effettuate attraverso gli Stati
Uniti. Poco dopo è felice e comunque rasserenato di
ritrovare l'America. Negli anni dal 1950 alla 1960 firma le
prestigiose copertine di Lite e di Look. È a questo punto
che comincia a interessarsi al cinema, quando realizza il
sensazionale ritratto di Marlon Brando in maglietta nel
film Un tram chiamato desiderio, nel 1951. L'anno
seguente sarà l'incontro con una esordiente che lo
affascina: Marilyn Monroe. Non l'abbandonerà più dal
momento che diverrà il fotografo di scena e anche il
consigliere di Billy Wilder. Sarà lui, nel settembre 1954, a
suggerire al regista la famosa sequenza con la gonna
sollevata dall'aria calda nel film Quando la moglie è in
vacanza, in occasione della prima ripresa
cinematografica effettuata direttamente in una strada di
New York, a Lexington Avenue. I ritratti di Marilyn si
susseguono vicino le immagini di Paul Newman, Ingrid
Bergman, Sophia Loren, Elisabeth Taylor e tanti altri. Tutte
queste immagini, per la maggior parte sconosciute, ci
sono state rivelate oggi in questa mostra.
Sam Shaw lavorò in stretta collaborazione con il tiglio
Larry (1937), Da! 1958 formarono un sodalizio a tal
punto che alcune immagini non sono di facile attribuzione
a colpo sicuro. È una raccolta esemplare di archivio
familiare che testimonia lo spirito di un'epoca, patrimonio
al tempo stesso cinematografico e fotografico.
