TOPIC: The usage of “en” and “au” with countries

sentences appropriately.
● write in correct sentences where and when people
may desire to go on vacation.

 IN SUMMARY:

au : used with masculine names of countries and some

cities’ names
Example: au Ghana, au Mexique, au Japon, au Texas, au Caire
etc.
● Je vais au Japon en été. (I’m going to Japan in Summer.)
● Mon oncle habite au Mexique. (My uncle lives in Mexico.)
en: used with feminine names of countries and countries’
names beginning with vowels or silent “ h ”
Example: en France, en Chine, en Allemagne, en Italie, en
Irak, en Hollande, etc.

● Paul va en Angleterre en hiver. (Paul goes to England in

winter.)
● Elle vit en Allemagne. (She lives in Germany.)
aux : used with plural names of countries and some
islands
Example: aux États-Unis, aux Emirats Arabes Unis, aux
Antilles, aux Pays-Bas etc.

● Je vais aux Etats-unis pendant les vacances.

(I go to the USA during the vacation.)
