When is it used ?
NOTE : -Remember that the present tense has only one form in French, whereas in English
you have two : the present simple tense (I clean) and the present continuous tense (I am
cleaning).
Ex: Je range ma chambre tous les samedis. I clean my room every Saturday.
Je range ma chambre en ce moment. I am cleaning my room right now.
-If you want to express an action and insist on the process (the fact that the person is in
the middle of doing it), you can use the expression être en train de + infinitive form of the
verb used.
Ex: Il est en train de s'endormir.
Mes parents sont en train d'arriver.
NOTE: There is always an “s” at the end of a verb conjugated with “tu” (but there is never an “s”
at the end of a verb conjugated with “il”)
NOTE: The third person singular of rompre and interrompre ends in -t: il rompt, il interrompt
a. Verbs ending in -cer change c to ç before o or a to keep the soft c sound [s]
Ex: COMMENCER : je commence, tu commences, il/elle/on commence, nous commençons,
vous commencez, ils/elles commencent
b. Verbs ending in -ger insert a mute e between the g and the o or a to keep the soft g sound [Ʒ]

mangent
Ex: S'ENNUYER : je m'ennuie, tu t'ennuies, il/elle/on s'ennuie, nous nous ennuyons, vous vous
ennuyez, ils/elles s'ennuient

syllable contains another mute e.
Ex: ACHETER : j'achète, tu achètes, il/elle/on achète, nous achetons, vous achetez, ils/elles
achètent.
NOTE: Two verbs with mute e, appeler et jeter, and compounds of these verbs, double the
consonant instead of adding the grave accent (è).
APPELER : j'appelle, tu appelles, il/elle/on appelle, nous appelons, vous appelez, ils/elles ont
appellent
JETER : je jette, tu jettes, il/elle/on jette, nous jetons, vous jetez, ils/elles jettent
e. Verbs with é in the syllable before the infinitive ending change é to è before the mute endings
-e, es, ent.

préfèrent
