History
Nearly all airplanes have wings, fuselage and empannage, but how
many strange styles and shapes can we see when turning over the
pages of any aeronautical catalogue: f rom the tapered fighter to the
clumsy and squat cargo aircraft, from the majestic bomber to the
Sleek liner.
Perhaps as no other means of transport, the airplane has specialised,
above all from a physical point of view, according to the various
duties for which it is destined.
Each "category" has its representative which can be def ined stereo-
typed: in the huge class of light aircraft, this role is surely occupied
by the Cessna 1 72.
The fact that its general outlines (which go back to the mid 1 950's)
have remained practically unchanged, denotes the validity of the
original design; "l 50 HP power, more than 200 km per hour speed,
approx. 40OO metres ceiling maximun, nearly 1O0O kms autonomy
fora maximun take offweight of one metricton (on an emptyweight,
of nearly 6OO kgs) and a typical arrangement of 4*2 people, are the
classic features of this "sky utility'', a cross between a lorry and a
helicopter, sedan and an "off the road".
These comparisons could seem a bit strange and maybe a little
exagerated for a machine that travels through the clouds, but if on
an immaginery journey, wetravelled from asmallmission in Equato-
rial Africa to freezing oil field in the tundra of Alaska, f rom an Alpine
airport to, a tiny airfield in a small Mediterranean island, we would
probablyalways find a Cessna 172 which, with thecoloursof asmall
airline company, an air club or in the anonymous livery of a private
individual, it carries out masses of duties (not only transport) which,
in most cases, no other means would be able to conclude.
For economy, ease of use, piloting and maintenance, load capacity
and versatility,lhe"172" can be considered a real "sky-maid-of-all-
worK'.

Mais que de formes 6tranges pouvons-nous voir en feuilletant
n'importe quel catalogue a6ronautique: en partant du chasseur
extrCmement effil6 au cargo trapu et maladroit; du bombardier
puissant b l'6l6gant liner.
Peut-6tre qu'aucun autre moyen de transport ne s'est sp6cialis6, si
bien que I'avion, surtout au point de vue physique selon les diverses
tAches qu'il doit accomplir.
Chaque "cat6gorie" a son propre repr6sentant que l'on peut d6f inir
st6r6otypique: dans la vase classe des avions l6gers ce r6le est
certainement occup6 par le Cessna '172.
Le fait m6me que seq lignes g6n6rales (qui remontent a 19S5
environ) n'ont pratiquement pas 6t6 chang6es, indiques la validit6
du projet initial; 150 HP de puissance, plus de 200 km/heure de
vitesse, 4OOO mEtres environ de plafond maximup, presgue 'l 000
kilombtres d'autonomie pour un poids maximun au d6collage de
plus d'une tonne (sur un poids A vide d'environ 600 kg) ainsi que le
nombre typique de places(4*2) sont les caract6ristiques classiques
de cette "voiture utilitaire du ciel", croisement 16ussi entre le fourgon
et l'h6licoptEre, la berline et le "tout terrain".
Ces comparaisons peuvent sembler 6tranges et exag6r6s pour un
appareilquitourne dans les nuages mais, si lors d'un hypoth6tique
voyage on se d6placait d'une petite mission en Afrique 6quatoriale
vers un camp p6trolier de l'Alaska, d'une colline alpine i un minu-
scule terrain d'aviation d'uneile de la M6diterran6e, trbs probable-
ment on y trouverait un Cessna 172 qui, sous les couleurs d'une
petite compagnie d'un a6roclub ou sous la livr6e anonyme d'un
particulier, accomplit toute une s6rie de tdches (non seulement de
transport)qui, dans la plupart des cas, ne pourraient 6tre accomplies
par n'importe quel autre moyen.
On peut consid6rer le"172", grAce i ses avantages 6conomiques,
safacilit6 d'emploi de pilotage et d'entretien, sacapacit6 decharge-
ment et sa diversit6 d'emplois, comme la"bonne btoutfaire du ciel";

You are about to build a hiehly detailed Ertl-ESCI air-
plane kit
You are advised to study the construction sequence
bef ore starting to burld your kit There are optrons which
you may wish to incorporate in your model such as u1l or
down landihg gear, etc which you should plan for Also
included are several different parnt and decalschemes to
represent different versions of the plane lt is best to
choose one before you start
Also be sure to add weight to the nose of yotrr plane so it
does not sit on its tail when assembled Small lead f ishrng
weights can be used for this Note, do not use styrene
cement for the lead weights, an instant type cem('nt
works best for this
Your model can be built without painting but for the bt'st
results painting is recommended Paint the cockprt be-
fore assembly to the fuselage Assemble the entire arr-
plane (except for the landing gear and underwing stores)
before painting. Caref ully f ile and sand all cement jornt\
being sure not to remove the engraving detail (The ad-
vanced modeler may wrsh to use a body putty to frll in
any small remaining gaps and joinfs - availablt: at better
hobby shops). lf you are sprav-paint inR or tlsinr.l .tn .trr
brush. be sure to cover the canopy with tape or nlasking
materral first

A small sharp hobby knife, tweezers, a
small flat and round file, Spring type
clothespins (for clamps), fine sandpaper,
small brushes (for liquid cement .nd
paint.)
TWEEZ ERS C EMENT
Tweezers are handy We recommend lhe
for holding very liny use of liquid poly
parts when you glue slyrene cement. APPIY
them in place or nrhen wilh a fine brush and
you are painting them toorhpick.
