Serial lines are used for communication with the UPS, Modem, DMR, and SP (positioner).
These lines cannot be tested in the application environment (using the ServiceTool), because access
to them is locked by the software servers (UPS daemon, PPP daemon, Seno server, SP server). The
tests must be performed at login level, with some additional preparation for UPS and modem lines.
Note: When communication is lost between workstation and UPS a shutdown occurs automatically
after two minutes (notification of lost communication occurs 10 seconds after the event).
Notice: Signal ground continuity (DB25: pin 7 ; DB9: pin 5, except for UPS side) is NOT tested by
these procedures. In case of doubt use an ohmmeter to check ground continuity.
The following diagram shows DB25 and DB9 pinouts:

2. OPENBOOT OPERATIONS
OpenBoot operation can be used for access to system information and diagnostics. The main options
are described below.
Either At the ok prompt, enter setenv; then press <Return> to accept the default option:
ok setenv diag–switch? true <Return>
Or Press <Stop>–D for about 10 seconds immediately after power on; the
Diag-switch parameter is automatically set to True.
With the Diag-level parameter set to its default setting of max, extended diagnostics run for
approximately 60 seconds. the monitor screen remains blank during this period.
2. At the end of the diagnostics, a list of any errors found is displayed before returning to the ok
prompt. The results displayed for a typical extended POST diagnostic (on an Ultra 1 workstation;
Diag–level parameter set to max) are shown in Illustrations 1 through 4. Note that certain serious
errors will prevent normal display; the monitor will remain blank.
Note: Diagnostic progress can be observed on a local terminal connected to the ttya serial port, or
through the modem connection (useful for OLC assistance). Refer to sections 3 and 4 for
more information.
3. Diagnostic progress and results are also indicated on the keyboard LEDs. This is particularly useful
if the monitor remains blank. The Caps Lock LED lights first to indicate the start of the POST
sequence; the remaining LEDs light to indicate the start of tests as shown below. In the event of a
test failing, the corresponding LED pattern will remain for a longer time than normal.

2–4 Boot –r
Certain changes to system parameters, for example addition or removal of SCSI devices, are not
recognized when a normal reset or boot command is executed. For theses parameters to be
recognized, the system must be restarted using the special “–r” boot option at OpenBoot PROM level.
The procedure requires the Root password. Proceed as follows:
1. Enter the OenBoot environment, to display the OK prompt. This can be done as described above,
or, to enter the OpenBoot environment from the application, (e.g., after making changes to the
installation screen), proceed as follows:
a. From the Browser, select Utilities/Services, enter your name and password, and select Utilities.
b. From the drop-down menu, select Command Tool to open a command window in which Unix
commands can be entered.
c. At the command prompt, type su root<Return>. Enter the Root password when requested.
d. At the root command prompt, type halt<Return>. to halt the system
2. When the OK prompt is displayed, type boot –r<Return>.
3. The system restarts; log in as usual.
The screen displays of a typical boot –r operation are shown in Illustration 3 for Sun Ultra 1 and
Illustration 6 for Sun Ultra 5, (with comments in italics).
57
GE Medical Systems SenoVision
REV 2 asm 2178813-100
The extended POST diagnostics (see above) include a complete memory test. A test memory
command is available, but note that it normally tests only the first megabyte of memory. To use it to
test more memory, the default value of the parameter selftest–#megs must be changed.
2–7 SCSI Test for Sun Ultra 1 / IDE Test for Sun Ultra 5
Note: This test must be run after a reset operation (see above). If it is run after a <Stop>–A
operation, the DS may hang. It is recommended that, before running the test, Autoboot is set
to False, and the Reset command executed from the ok prompt.
Remember to reset the Autoboot parameter to True after the test!
D To check the built-in SCSI bus, type probe–scsi<Return> at the ok prompt.
Information on all devices (Targets) connected to the built-in SCSI bus is displayed.
With a DS Sun Ultra 1, note that, in addition to the ”internal targets (local disks), the check for the
built-in SCSI bus will also show the CD-R drive and/or the DASM if they are installed.
With a DS Sun Ultra 5, note that, the check for the built-in SCSI bus will only show the CD-R drive
and/or the DASM if they are installed.
The IDS is not seen by this check. To check SCSI communication with the IDS, run the Application,
and select Configuration from the Service Tool menu. The Digital System/SCSI devices window should
report that the IDS is connected.
The output of a typical probe-scsi test is shown in the diagram opposite.

Go to step 4.
3. If working in Windows 95, set Hyperterminal parameters
a. Access the Hyperterminal program: select Start/Programs/Accessories/HyperTerminal
b. n the small window displayed, double-click on the Hyperterminal.exe icon
c. The program starts, with a new configuration setup; in the dialog box Connection description,
enter: Senovision <Enter>
d. In next dialog box, Phone number, select: Connect using and choose Direct to Com 1
(assuming Com 1 port is free on your laptop). Click OK.
e. In next dialog box Com 1 properties, select the following parameters:
Bits per second: 9600 Data bits: 8 (default)
Parity: none (default) Stop bit: 1 (default)
Flow control: none
f. f. Save this configuration: select File/Save as.../Senovision.ht/Save.
This configuration is now available for future use; retrieve it by double-clicking on the
Senovision.ht icon.
g. Got to step 4
4. Use a null-modem cable (part no. 2102311) to connect the chosen laptop serial port to the DS
serial port ttya (normally used for the Insite modem).
5. If possible, set the DS Autoboot parameter to False (see above).
6. Power down the DS; disconnect the DS keyboard.
7. Power up the DS.
Because the keyboard is disconnected, all messages are redirected to the ttya port and thus to the
laptop Terminal program.

1. INTRODUCTION
Errors are signalled in various ways according to their impact on operation. All errors detected by the
system are recorded in an error log file, using a code unique to each type of error. Some alert the
operator to a problem by displaying a message on the screen or on the Senographe console. Certain
catastrophic errors may cause the system to shut down and reboot.
Section 2 of this chapter describes Error Log Files.
The following error message lists are given in this chapter. Each list is given in order of the error codes
which are written to error log files. As far as possible, an indication is given of the results of the error
on system operation, with an indication of the type of warning message which is displayed

4. SP ERROR MESSAGES
Errors detected during SP operation are signalled on the SP display. They are also reported to the DS,
and stored in error log files on the SP and on the DS.
Errors message consist of two number codes, e.g., 01/29. The first code indicates the subassembly
concerned; the second indicates the nature of the fault.
Errors affecting security (04/xx and 10/xx) cause the SP to reinitialize (reboot) automatically.
This table lists SP errors which are currently detected and displayed; a list of subassembly codes is
given below.

1. INTRODUCTION
The SenoVision is an option available for use with Senographe systems.
It uses a digital cassette concept to provide a large field of view (6 cm x 6 cm or 8 cm x 8 cm) and high
image quality.
Applications include:
D Digital Spot Application for diagnosis and accurate location of suspect areas.
D Stereotactic Application. An optional steroeotactic positioner, incorporating an automatic needle
positioning biopsy sytem, operates with the digital cassette for accurate and fast Stereotaxy.

4–1–1 Overview
OpenBoot firmware is the standard firmware for Sun systems. openBoot firmware is stored in the boot
PROM of the system, and is executed immediately when the system is powered on. The primary task
of the OpenBoot firmware is to start up (boot) the operating syst
The DS system automatic boot process normally loads and starts applications after completing the
power up and POST (Power On Self Test) procedures. If this procedure is disabled or interrupted, the
OpenBoot PROM level is entered. The system displays an ok prompt, and commands (for system
information utilities, diagnostics, etc.) can be entered manually from the keyboard. Suggestions for
troubleshooting using OpenBoot are given in TSG 003.
4–1–2 Features
The current OpenBoot architecture provides a considerable increase in functionality over the boot
PROMs in earlier Sun systems. Although first implemented on SPARC systems, the design is
processor-independent. Some notable features include:
– Plug-in device drivers. A plug-in device driver is usually loaded from a plug-in device such
as an SBus card. The Plug-in device driver can be used to boot the OS (Operating
System) from that device, or to display text on the device before the OS has activated its
own drivers. This allows input/output devices supported by a particular system to evolve
without changing the system PROM.
– FCode interpreter. Plug-in device drivers are written in a machine-independent interpreted
language called FCode. Each OpenBoot system PROM contains an FCode interpreter.
Thus, the same device and driver can be used on machines with different CPU instruction
sets.
– Device tree. The device tree is an OpenBoot data structure describing the devices
(permanently installed and plug-in) attached to a system. both the user and the OS are
able to determine the system hardware configuration by inspecting the device tree.
– Programmable user interface. The OpenBoot user interface is based on the interactive
programming language Forth. Sequences of user commands can be used to form
complete programs. This provides a powerful tool for debugging hardware and software.

THEORY
– By halting the operating system.
– By using the <Stop>–A key combination from the keyboard.
Note; This abruptly breaks operation of the OS, and should be used with caution; it can
damage the Unix operating system and/or the application software.
– By cycling the system power. If automatic booting is not enabled, the system will enter the
OpenBoot environment immediately. If the system is configured to boot an OS
automatically, the OpenBoot environment can be entered by pressing <Stop>–A after the
display console banner appears, but before the system starts to boot the OS.
– When the system hardware detects an error from which it cannot recover (Watchdog
Reset).
OpenBoot firmware provide three external interfaces: an interface for the OS or other standalone
programs, an interface for expansion bus plug-in boards (e.g., SBus), and a command line interface
for the user at the system console.
The command line interface operates as a Forth monitor. The Forth Monitor prompt is ok. When the
Forth Monitor is entered the following is displayed:

A full device path name is a series of node names separated by slashes (/), as in the following
example;
/sbus@1,f8000000/esp@0,40000/sd@3,0:a
The root of the tree is the machine node, which is not named explicitly, but i indicated by the leading
slash. Each node name has the form: name@address:arguments.
In the above example:
– 1,f8000000 represents an address on the main system bus, because the SBus interface
is directly attached to the main system bus.
– 0,40000 is an SBus slot number and an offset within that slot; the esp device is in SBus
slot 0 at offset 40000 (in this example the device is a SCSI host adaptor, though the name
does not indicate this directly).
– 3,0 is a SCSI target and logical unit number, because the sd (SCSI disk) device is
attached to a SCSI bus at target 3, logical unit 0.
4–1–6 Aliases
There are two kinds of device name:
– Full device path names such as the one described above.
– Device aliases, such as disk.
A device alias, or simply an alias, is a way of representing a device path name. The alias represents
an entire device path name, not a component of it. In our example, disk may represent the entire
device path name /sbus@1,f8000000/esp@0,40000/sd@3,0:a.
Systems normally have predefined device aliases for most commonly used devices, so it is rarely
necessary to type a full device path name.
Some typical device aliases are shown below:

5–1 Components
THEORY
The Image Detection System (IDS) provides direct capture of radiological information in digital form. It
has three main components:
D The Digital Cassette (DC) (Camera Head). This is placed in the Bucky as a direct replacement for
the normal film cassette.
X-ray radiation entering the DC strikes an X-ray sensitive layer (the scintillator), which converts it
into visible light. This light passes through a fibre optic coupler which collimates it onto a charge
coupled device (CCD) array (4096 x 4096 cells; 60 mm x 60 mm). Each cell of the array collects a
charge which is proportional to the intensity of the radiation at the cell position, and to the
integration time of the exposure. At the end of the exposure, the charge values are binned
(combined in groups of 2 x 2 cells) and read out from the array in sequence. The binned values
are then converted to 12-bit digital form for transmission to the IDSE over a high speed serial link.
DC commands and status requests are received from the IDSE over an RS232 link.
The effective resolution of the DC is 2048 x 2048 pixels.
D The IDS Electronics (IDSE) unit. This acts as a system controller and provides an interface
between the DC and the Digital System (DS). It controls the operation of the DC according to
commands received from the DS, and transmits the received digital data to the DS over a SCSI-2
FAST interface (to 10MB/s).
The DS transmits configuration commands, status requests, and mode change commands to the
IDSE, which makes the requested configuration changes, and responds with the IDS
identification block and the current status and mode information.
D The Chiller. To avoid unacceptable variations in dark current (the signal level observed in the CCD
array in the absence of radiation, which is affected by temperature), the CCD is kept at a nominal
12° C by a thermo-cooler (a Peltier effect semi-conductor device). The chiller pumps cooling water
through the DC, and removes heat from the hot side of the thermo-cooler. There is no electrical
connection between the chiller and the other components of the system.
See Illustration 1 for a block diagram of the IDS system.

of the highest possible quality. These corrections compensate for a number of factors, including:
– X-ray shading.
– Response variations between the cells of the CCD array.
– Non-functioning pixels (dead pixels). These are defined as pixels with responses more
than 5% outside their local average after offset and flatfield correction.
– Variations in the dark current (signal generated by thermal noise in the absence of X-ray
illumination).
– Scintillator variation.
– Variations in fibre-optic transmission.
– Presence of contamination within the detector assembly.
– Variations in the optical coupling between the scintillator and the fibre-optic faceplate, and
between the fibre-optic faceplate and the CCD array.
These factors, taken together, define the fixed pattern noise of the system. They are corrected for by
digital processing, using parameters calculated during calibration procedures.
5–4–1 Calibration
Three calibration procedures are performed in the factory on each system (Offset, Spot Mo/Mo, Flat
field, Dead Pixel). Correction files for use by the post-acquisition digital correction routines are
calculated, and are delivered with the system.
These calibrations do not need to be repeated in the field unless major changes are made (for
example, exchange of the Digital Cassette).
D Offset calibration. Frames of dark images (no X-rays) are collected at different CCD temperatures,
and are used to create two arrays (B and C) of offset correction coeficients.
D Flat field calibration. X-ray images are collected at two different doses, and are used to create an
array of gain correction coeficients.
D Dead pixel calibration. X-ray images are collected, and are used to create a map of dead pixels
for use by the dead pixel correction routine. Less than 50 dead pixels are allowed on the CCD
(from a total of 4 million).
5–4–2 Corrections
D Dead pixels are not used in the corrected image, but are replaced by the local average, thus
avoiding anomalous points in the display.
D Offset and flat field correction requires a calculation of the following general form at each point
(i,j):
Corrected Image (i,j) = (Aquired Image (i,j) – Egain x (It x (B x DT + C)) – Readout) x Gain(i,j)
Acquired Image (i,j) is the raw acquired image. Egain is the Electronic Gain setting.
It is the exposure integration time. B is an array of slope coefficients for the DC.
DT is the difference from calibration temperature. C is an array of offset coefficients for the DC.
Readout is term calculated from the Bias portion of the Video frame.
Gain(i,j) is an array of flat field coefficients for pixel gain correction.

6. POWER SUPPLIES
All power for the SenoVision system is supplied from the hospital main supply through a dedicated
THEORY
circuit breaker and the SenoVision Wallbox.
Powr on/off for the UPS is remote controlled from the Wallbox pusbutton, connected through the
Y-cable W07. When the pushbutton is pressed, it connects pins 7 and 8 of the UPS interface
connector.
Critical subsystems are supplied through a Smart UPS system rated at 700 VA The UPS protects the
DS and main SenoVision components from high or low incoming voltages, and allows a controlled
shutdown in the event of complete loss of power. All UPS operating parameters can be monitored
and/or controlled by PowerChute Plus software on the DS.
The following items are powered from the UPS:
– DS
– DS Monitor
– IDS-E and the Digital Cassette
– Stereotactic Positioner
– Archiving system (option)
Total power supplied in normal circumstances is 560 VA (80% of the UPS capacity). When power is
lost with the UPS battery at 100% charge, the time to reach the minimum capacity is about eight
minutes.
Note that the printer should not be connected to the UPS.
