CERTIFIED ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR STATEMENT

All electrical Installations that are preliminary to positioning of the equipment at
the site prepared for the equipment shall be performed by licensed electrical
contractors. In addition, electrical feeds into the Power Distribution Unit shall be
performed by licensed electrical contractors. Other connections between pieces
of electrical equipment, calibrations and testing shall be performed by qualified
GE Medical personnel. The products involved (and the accompanying electrical
installations) are highly sophisticated, and special engineering competence is
required. In performing all electrical work on these products, GE will use its own
specially trained field engineers. All of GE’s electrical work on these products will
comply with the requirements of the applicable electrical codes.

The purchaser of GE equipment shall only utilize qualified personnel (i.e., GE’s
field engineers, personnel of third–party service companies with equivalent
training, or licensed electricians) to perform electrical servicing on the
equipment.

IMPORTANT...X–RAY PROTECTION
X–ray equipment if not properly used may cause injury. Accordingly, the
instructions herein contained should be thoroughly read and understood by
everyone who will use the equipment before you attempt to place this equipment
in operation. The General Electric Company, Medical Systems Group, will be glad
to assist and cooperate in placing this equipment in use.

Although this apparatus incorporates a high degree of protection against

x–radiation other than the useful beam, no practical design of equipment can
provide complete protection. Nor can any practical design compel the operator
to take adequate precautions to prevent the possibility of any persons carelessly
exposing themselves or others to radiation.

It is important that anyone having anything to do with x–radiation be properly

trained and fully acquainted with the recommendations of the National Council
on Radiation Protection and Measurements as published in NCRP Reports
available from NCRP Publications, 7910 Woodmont Avenue, Room 1016,
Bethesda, Maryland 20814, and of the International Commission on Radiation
Protection, and take adequate steps to protect against injury.

SECTION 1
CT/I OPTIONAL SMART BEAM SOFTWARE INSTALLATION

Notice This Software Option Installation assumes that the system that this will be installed on
already has the correct collimator type required for this option to operate properly.

The correct collimator type is: 46–296300G4 or 46–296300G5. If this system does not
have either of these collimators installed, do not install this option software.

See the Material Lists in Section 4 of this chapter for Catalog Numbers for ordering the
Smart Beam collimator.

1.1 Check Installed Collimator Type

The Smart Beam Option requires that the correct collimator type be installed in the CT System’s
Gantry.

CAUTION Image Artifacts may result if the wrong collimator type is used with the Smart
Beam Option Software. Ensure that the correct collimator type is installed
before installing the Smart Beam Option Software.

(1) Remove the gantry right and left side covers.

(2) Disable the Gantry HVDC and Axial Drive using the switches on the Service switch
box in the gantry.
(3) Prop open the gantry top cover.
(4) Loosen the hand–wheel that retains the front cover support rod on the right side of the
gantry.
(5) Loosen/remove the hand–wheel that hold the front cover in place and swing the front
cover open.
(6) Rotate the gantry frame until the X–Ray tube is at the 3 o’clock position.
(7) Look for the Model/Serial Number tag on the front face of the collimator and verify the
model number is one of:
› 46–296300G4
or
› 46–296300G5
(8) If the collimator is either a G4 or a G5 collimator reverse steps (5) thru (1) and restore
the gantry to operation.
Note 4 If the collimator is not either 46–296300G4 or 46–296300G5 STOP this procedure and DO
NOT install the Smart Beam Option Software.
If the collimator is 46–296300G1, G2, or G3, you must first acquire, install, and correctly
align an 46–296300G4 or G5 collimator before installing this software option.
The optional Smart Beam Collimator is available via an Option Catalog Order (B7530SC).
See the Material Lists in Section 4 for further information.

INSTALLING AND REMOVING MEMORY

To install or remove memory, you must power off the workstation, wait 5 minutes after powering off the workstation to allow the heat
sinks to cool, attach the wrist strap, and remove the system module.

Notice DIMMS ARE VERY STATIC–SENSITIVE!!

Static–sensitive components may be damaged if not handled in a static–free environment.
Static Sensitive Devices Take appropriate precautions (e.g., wear properly grounded wrist strap) when handling all
boards. Dual in line memory modules (DIMMs) are extremely sensitive to static electricity.
Handle the DIMMs carefully and wear the wrist strap to avoid the flow of static electricity.

2.1 About Memory

Before you install DIMMs in your OCTANE workstation, read the following information.
» Bank 1 (sockets 1 and 2) must always be filled.
› Minimum memory configuration is 64 MB in a bank. (2 x 32 MB DIMM)
› Maximum configuration is 512 MB in a bank. (2 x 256 MB DIMM)
» Banks are filled sequentially; when Bank 1 is full, fill Bank 2. Do not skip banks.
» Each bank is either empty, or contains two DIMMs, one in each of the two sockets.
» Each banks of DIMMS must contain two DIMMs of the same capacity or density and of
the same type.
Capacity refers to the number of megabytes in a DIMM: 32, 64, 128, and so on.
Type refers to the construction of the DIMM. Because DIMM construction cannot be
determined visually, it is important to know that two DIMMs are the same type before
you begin installation. If you insert two DIMMs of different types, the system does not
work. Banked DIMMs and stacked DIMMs are two examples of many different types of
memory.
» Minimum memory capacity in the OCTANE workstation is 64 MB. (2 x 32 MB
DIMMs)
» Maximum memory capacity in the OCTANE workstation is 2 GB. (8 x 256 MB

2.1 About Internal Drives

» Unsupported devices may not work with the OCTANE workstation, and may cause
problems with supported products.
» All internal devices have a 3.5–inch form factor.
» Internal SCSI devices (drives) are on a separate bus and are automatically given an
address when they inserted. Each bus has a unique address: Bus 0 (internal devices) has
addresses such as 0–1, 0–2, 0–3; the system drive is SCSI ID 0–1, the option drive
above it is SCSI ID 0–2, and the unused option drive slot at the top of the Octane
workstation is SCSI ID 0–3. Bus 1 (external devices) has addresses such as 1–1, 1–2, 1-3.

Notice Drives can be easily damaged. Handle drive carefully; do not drop it or handle it roughly.

2.2 Power Off Console and Install Optional Disk
