This manual must be inserted at the front of the customer's service manual
after battery installation is completed. It contains information needed to deĆ
termine battery condition in the future.

This is an addendum to Directions 46-001114 (SM A0654D), 46-001116 (SM

A0654E), and 46-001118 (SM A0654F). It is intended for use in conjunction with
them, by a qualified GE service technician, when installing the Lead-Acid Based BatĆ
tery Upgrade Kit in the AMX 110, 2, and 3 X-Ray units. Once installed, the kit
(known as GE-GEL) provides the operator with a maintenance free system.

It is extremely important that the unit is `PLUGGED IN' and in the
`CHARGE' mode, when not in use. If the AMX is left on, and the batteries
completely discharged, it may be necessary to charge them for 24 hours before
using the unit.

The operator may notice an increase in the number of exposures that can be made beĆ
fore the batteries need charging. This is due to the greater electrical capacity, approxiĆ
mately 40% greater, of the Lead-Acid over the Nickel-Cadmium system.

The Recharge Suggested Light" on the AMX 3 will flash after successive exposures,
but should be disregarded until it remains on.

This operation can be performed with the aid of a standard tool kit, to include:

&* Individual cells may be replaced if batteries are less than 6 months old, otherĆ
wise, both packs must be replaced.

1. Turn main circuit breaker OFF". Remove all covers necessary to access the batĆ
tery packs. (See Section 2-1 of this manual)
2. Make sure that all connections on the battery packs are tight.

& %&* &+(*" !*% *! **(- '&)*) ( $ & # % &+(*" !*%"%
 ,"## &$'()) *! '&)*)

3. Make sure that the battery packs are fully charged prior to load testing. To verify
full charge, turn main circuit breaker ON" and plug Mobile Charging System in.
Turn key switch to CHARGE". The voltage should rise across the battery packs
to 138 volts ± 1 volt. Allow the batteries to keep charging until the charge current
is less than 250 mA and 138 volts is maintained across the packs. At this point,
measure the voltage across each individual battery and record. The voltage
should be between 13.6 volts and 14.0 volts per battery.
4. Turn key switch OFF", unplug Mobile Charging System and turn main circuit
breaker OFF".
5. Measure the overall voltage across the battery packs and record. Overall voltage
should be 130 volts or higher. The balance in voltage across each individual batĆ
tery should be ± .3 volts. For example: If the overall voltage is 132, the voltage
across each individual battery should be 132/10 ± .3 (or 12.9 to 13.5 volts).
6. Connect the positive clip from the GE (110 V/1200 W) Battery Load to the posiĆ
tive battery terminal. (Red terminal.)
7. Connect the negative clip from the GE (110 V/1200 W) Battery Load to the negaĆ
tive battery terminal. (Black terminal.)
8. Set the Timer on the GE (110 V/1200 W) Battery Load to 15 minutes.
9. Press and hold start button on the GE (110 V/1200 W) Battery Load until run
LED turns ON".
10. After the battery packs have discharged for 1 minute, measure and record the
overall voltage as well as the voltage on each individual battery. If the balance
between the individual batteries is less than ± .3 volts, continue to Step 11. If one
or two of the batteries are out of balance, stop the load test and refer to Trouble
Shooting Guide Section 11-1-2 (Low Capacity or Defect in Single Batteries).
11. After battery packs have discharged for 5 minutes, measure and record overall
voltage as well as voltage across each individual battery. If the balance between
individual batteries is less than ± .3 volts, continue to Step 12. If one or two of
the batteries are out of balance stop the load test and refer to Trouble Shooting
Guide section 11-1-2 (Low Capacity or Defect in Single Batteries).
