The spot-film device has an x-ray apemre of fixed position The cassette carriage and cassette holder
provides the two degrees of motion needed to position the cassette over the x-ray aperture for programmed
spot films See Illustration 5-3
The cassette carriage and cassette holder have separate operating systems to provide motion in the two
directions Referring to Illustration 5-4,5 5 and 56,the cassette carriage operates as follows

Whereas the cassette carriage positions the cassette crosswise the table, the cassette holder positions the
cassette lengthwise the table The cassette holder system operates as follows
1 Cam F controls the counterweight travel through its follower - the counterweight stop lever The
counterweight can be released for long, short or no travel
2 When the cassette carriage moves forward, the actuating spring pulls the counterweight to the right
3 The cassette holder moves to the l e f t as the counterweight moves to the right through a system of
cables and pulleys

3-2 AirCheck
The function of the air check is to cushion cassette carriage stopping after forward travel by action of a
piston inside the air check cylinder The adjustment screw controls cushioning by controlling the rate a t
which the trapped air escapes See Illustration 513 Note that the air check is an integral part of the
cam shaft
The forward travel of the cassette carriage is limited by the stops on the air check The rotation of the air
check (and the position of the stops) is controlled by the sequencer

The load latch is found on front load units only The function of the load latch is to hold carriage in t h e
load position while the cassette is inserted The s31 cassette interlock prevents operation of the load
latch if cassette i s not inserted all the way When the cassette transfer bar, 93,is depressed to return the
carriage to the parked position Sol 3 disengages the latch by pulling on the connecting bar When the
latch disengages it closes S27 which starts the drrvemotor to return the cassette carriage to the parked

1 With carrlage parked the hub on sprocket shaft
is under a CCW torque from the forward
spring. The friction between the spring and the
sprocket shaft hub i s however greater than the
oppowng torque caused by the forward spnng.
2 When solenoid IS actuated I t mtates the spnng
approximately 25' relaxing the grip of the
spring on the hub secured to the sprocker shaft.
The torque on the sprocket 15 greater than the ON
friaion between spring and the hub allowing the
carriage to move forward
3. When the solenoid releases the spring the motor
can drive the carriage to park through the spring
ILLUSTRATION 5-15
For forward motion of the cassette carriage, the following events must occur (SeeIllustration 5 1 6 )
S8 is depressed Sol 2 moves Lever N and Actuator Pin I towards the rear This moves Hub I and through
Spring C Hub H Actuator E on Hub H releases Spring B from Hub M Hub M and the drive sprocket on
Shaft K are free to rotate The forward spring then pulls the cassette carriage to the forward position As
the carriage starts forward switches are actuated as shown on Illustration 5 11 and listed on Table 5 2
Notethat after operation of Sol 20n 9D1 and 12C1,and later models a dropping resistor R4 is interposedin the circuit
by S38 to prevent heating
For return of cassette carriage to park the following events must occur The x-ray switch is released (see
Section 6 Automatic Casette Return) or S8 is depressed a second time Sol 2 is deenergized and returns
Lever N and Actuator Pin I toward the front causing Spring B to lock Hub M through Hub I Spring C and
Hub H and Actuator E Sol 3 (Front Load Only) releases the load latch which closes S27 starting the
motor Hub G locked to the motor shaft turns Shaft K through spring B and Hub M thus pulling the
cassette carriage to the rear As the carriage reaches i t s parked position, S26A opens, stopping Motor B1

4-1 CounterweightAssembly
The counterweight is shown on Illustration 518 Cam F, on the sequencer cam shaft controls the posi
tions of the counterweight through the counterweight stop lever for no travel (park position), short travel,
or long travel Table 53 shows the amount of travel of the cassette holder corresponding to each position
of the sequencer Operation o f the cassette holder is detailed on Illustration 5 1 7
Note that an actuating spring applies tension to the counterweight through cable 3 This spring tension
causes the counterweight and hence the cassette holder t o move when the counterweight stop lever releases
the countemeight The counterweight is required to balance the cassette when the x ray table is vertical
J
The counterweight has a built in air check to prevent banging of the counterweight and cassette holder
during forward travel It has t w o sections, one for short travel and the other for long travel Since return
travel speed is about half that o f the forward travel, sufficient cushioning on return i s provided by the
cushion spring.

4-2 CassetteHolder
The cassette holder is shipped with spacers to accept wafer site 91/2” x 93-/2_’1Halsey cassettes or
equivalent However standard size S1/2” x 9-1/2” Halsey cassettes or equivalent may be used by removing
the nylon spacers which are secured with snap fasteners Simply remove the fluoroscopic screen or intensi
fier move the carriage to full film positlon and pry spacers o u t
Kodak X-OMATIC cassettes may also be used But as mentioned in Section 1, the Kodak cassette IS
smaller than standard size and may not reliably release the mechanical cassette holder interlock on front
load units Service Note 1975 gives details of the required modification
When the cassette is inserted, it must release the mechanical cassette holder interlock The mechanical
cassette holder interlock prevents cross travel of the cassette holder if a cassette has not been inserted
Without t h i s interlock the cassette holder operating system could be damaged if the carriage is brought
forward with no cassette in place and the table is vertical The interlock on the rear load carriage differs
in design from the front load although its function is the same See Illustration 5 19 On cassette holder
interlock for front load unit, the interlock lever pivots off the stop on the carriage as the cassette is inserted

The Sequencer Mechanism automatically programs full, longitudinal half film lateral half film or quarter
film exposures See Illustration 520
The sequencer solenoid (Sol 1) is operated by the sequenceselector push buttons located on the front
control panel and is mechanically linked to the cam shaft Sol 1 is also automatically operated by a pulse
circuit when the cassette carriage returns to the rear (parked) position After completion of a series (entire
film is exposed) the sequencer turns to a load position Until the cassette is changed or the sequence
selector is reset, the carriage will merely travel between parked and load positions when the cassette
transfer bar is depressed Note that for rear load units load position and parked position are the same

The sequencer operates as follows When Sol 1 i s energized by depressing a sequence selector push
button the solenoid armature rotates S30 30° A rocker arm detent and 12 position ratchet combine to
limit rotation to 30° Near the completion of the 300 rotation a cam on the solenoid shaft opens the
interrupter contact breaking continuity to the solenoid The solenoid returns again closing the interrupter
contact S30 does not reverse direction with the solenoid because of the ratchet and pawl mechanism
Two spring loaded ball detents on the end of the switch shaft insures positwe switch positioning
With the interrupter contact closing each time t h e solenoid stops, Sol 1 continues to sequence until the

5-3 Sequence Pulse Circuit
The sequence pulse circuit allows Sol1 to automatically advance S30 to the next sequence position when
the carriage returns to parked position The circuit functions as follows With cassette carriage forward
S21A is closed charging capacitor C25 on TB3 (was C2 on models prior to 9D1 and 12C1) through T63R4
( R1 on models prior to 9D1 and 12C1) When the cassette carnage returns to park, S266 and S21B close
S21B closes a pulse circuit energizing relay K12 (was RE1 on models prior to 9D1 and 12C1 ) The K12
contacts close momentarily and Sol 1 is pulsed through S21B advancing the sequencer t o the next position
The sequencer will not advance however, if in a load position because cam A operated switch S29 will be
open The carriage will go back and forth from park to load position (for front load) as the cassette
transfer bar is depressed until the sequencer ISreset by depressing a selector push button
NOTE On 11FS9A1 and early 9B1 units, quick operation could prevent the C2 (250 mf) capacttor from
charging sufficiently to provide proper sequencing T h e result was a double exposure if this happened
without the customer noticing it
The problem was solved (as documented in Service Note 1462) by replacing the 3 3K R 1 with a 2 2K 1 W
resistor This change was made on most 961 devices in the factory

Table 5 4 is a summary of spot film switches and relays which are automatically operated K13 S39 and
S40 are discussed in Section 8
The Models 9 B 1 9C1 12A1 and 12B1 have automatic pushbutton collimation When the AUTO MAN
rocker switch S34 IS set to AUTO, the servo collimator is automatically set to the film size selected in
both fluoroscopic and radiographic modes through S O C & D and P6 P 9 With s34 on MAN collimator
is controlled by manual pots P1 and P2 in both fluoroscopic and radiographic modes
Models 9D1 and 12C1 have several new collimation features Both the myelographic mask and the corn
pression cone are now electrically interlocked (S39for mask and S40 for cone) with the servo-controlled
collimator With the mask pulled forward the collimator automatically restricts the exposure area to half
film lengthwise the table With both cone and mask pulled forward the exposure area IS restricted to a
quarter film These restrictions apply to both the radiographic and fluoroscopic position of the cassette
carriage Cone and mask must be pushed back all the way when not in use S39 and 540 are shown on
Illustration 533
Also, regardless of the position of the AUTO MAN switch S34 collimator control now goes into the
automatic mode when the cassette carriage goes into the radiographic position This is accomplished by
the addition of relay K13 which is energized when contact K 8 B closes after S8 IS momentarily depressed
If the AUTO MAN switch is set on manual collimator control returns to the manual mode when the
cassette carriage moves to the fluoroscopic position
Table 5 5 lists maximum field sites available depending on position of cone mask cassette carriage

8.3 Collimator Control on Types 9E and 12D and later Spot-Rlm Devices
The Types 9E and 12C, and later, have some added collimabon features not included on the 9D1 or 12Cl
As was the case with the 9D1 and 12C1, the myelographic mask and compression cone are electrically
interlocked (s39 for mask and S40 for cone) with the servocontrolled collimator With mask pulled
forward, the collimator automatically limits the exposure area to a half film lengthwise the table
With both cone and mask pulled forward the exposure area is limited t o a quarter film These lirnita -
tions apply to both radiographic and fluoroscopic position of the casette carriage Cone and mask must
be pushed back all the way when not in use S39 and S40 are shown on Illustration 5-33
Swttch S41 and field limtt potentiometers P10 and P11 have been added to the potentiometer bracket at
the rear of the spot-film as shown on Illustration 5-34 S41 which is not accessible to the customer, is
appropriately set a t installation depending on the image intensifier being used with the spot film device
If an optional field limit signal ISavailable from the intensifier the intensifier will confine the field within
the borders of the image receptor in the fluoroscopic mode For other intensifiers, S41 is set so the fluoro
pots P10 and P11 limit the field size to the size of the image receptor in the fluoroscopic mode If the
fluoroscopic screen is used exclusively, P10 and P11 are adjusted t o confine the field within the borders
of the screen However if both screen and intensifier are used interchangeably then P10 and P11 must be
On the 9E and 12D and later unrts, the winng of K13 contacts is changed from the 9D1 and 12C1 The AUTO-
MAN switch S34, when in the MAN position connects the manual controls into the circuit regardless of
the position of the cassette carriage This permits restricting the exposure area to less than the nominal
film area With the S34 switch on AUTO and cassette carriage parked, field size is limited by fluoro pots
P10 and P11 or optional limit signal When s34 is set to MAN and cassette carriage is either parked or
forward the operator has manual control of the collimator but again P10 and P11 or the optional field
limit signal will limit field size
Refer to Table 5-6 for maximum field size avadable depending on position of cone mask, cassette carnage S30 C &
D and the AUTO-MAN swttch S34 Also refer to schematics Chapter 7, for the 9E or 12D. and later

Two conditionsmust be met beforeeither a spot-film or fluoro exposure can be made The spot-film device must be in
position over the X-ray tube and the image intensifier must be properly mounted on the spot-film device From this
point on the arcuit must tell the generator which type of exposure is to be made Spot-Film or Fluoro and when the
exposure is to be made
A circuit IS provided to move the cassette carnage to the rear park position after a spot-film exposure has been made
and the exposure switch released
When fluoro is selected relay 53K25 Fluoro Or..; is turned on The A and B contacts of the relay transfer the
generator from RAD to Fluoromode by opening the exposure pathto 53K10 RAD Expandclosing the pathto 56XC2
Fluoro X-Ray Contactor When a spot-film exposure IS required Spot-Film Transfer Relay 53K25 is activated which
opens the current path through the Fluoro Only Relay 53K17 and allowstheX-Ray generator to transfer from Fluoroto
RAD exposure
To make a fluoro exposure, the cassette carnage must be in the rear park position Switch S i 2 will be achvated
opening its normally closed A contact and dosing its normally open B contacts Relay 3TB3-Kll Spot FilmTransfer
will be off because the cassette carriage IS in the rear park position With K11 off its D contacts will be open This
leaves the generator in fluoro since generator Spot-Film Transfer Relay 53K17 is off
If the cassette program indicated the cassette had been fully exposed switch S28 would be open This would not
prevent a fluoro exposure since the cassette carriage is in rear park and S22 is closed providing a path around the
cassette load interlock
When either the X ray foot switch or spot-film exposure button is pressed the circuit is completed through generator
Fluoro X-Ray Contactor 56XC2 This will produce a fluoro exposure
A second path from generator A2 through 2TB3-K6 is completed This arcuit is used only dunng spot-film exposures
and will be explained later

The forward spring is factory set to the 1 1/4 dimension shown on Illustration 6 1 Attempt to adjust
for smooth forward stopping of the cassette carriage by adjusting the air check a t the air check adlustmg
screw
Adjust air check to obtain these results Carriage with no cassette inserted must come forward to the
load postion just fast enough to latch reliably in the load position Note that position of latch assembly
can be adjusted to optimize a smooth stopping action This is in addition to load latch adjustment
covered in Section 1 3 Make a t least 12 trials Since rear load units have no load latch adjust air check
for smooth stopping a t Stop D (sequence positions 3 4 and 7)with cassette in cassette holder If the
customer complains of banging when the cassette carriage comes into the load position on front load
units, t e l l him you can reduce it if he will at all times have a cassette inserted when he parks the carriage
The test for reliable load latch operation can then be made with a cassette in the carriage
If the air check is worn to a degree where the carriage bangs excessively when the adjusting screw is
turned to full clockwise adjustment, some relief can be had by increasing the 1 1/4" forward spring setting
This will slow carriage forward travel somewhat and should be used only until the air check can be replaced
Carriage with cassette should make a smooth stop at Stop D and make a minimum of noise, when coming
to load position on front load units On older models, the radiation baffle (see note) IS going to cause some
noise Reference Service Notes 1326 and 1380
- NOTE The radiationbafflefound on front load unrts through 11FS9C1 has been replaced by a flexible lead
curtain This lead curtain IS now standard on Models 9D1 and 12C1, and Types 9E and 12D, and
later models
As mentioned in Service Note 1380, some of the early model " 9's may have been shipped with a 1 1/4
long forward spring adjustment screw which could result in excess forward speed Replace the short screw
with a 2 1/4" long 1032 screw if not already done

The f l a t spring slip clutch on shaft K of t h e motor drwe prevents motor overloading and prevents bounce
on return of the cassette carriage to park Poor adjustment of this slip clutch can lead t o machine gunning,
damage to the motor drive and carriage, noise, and faulty sequencing See Illustration 6 2 for location of
motor drive
To adjust the slip clutch, proceed as follows With carriage in parked position and wth cassette in place,
back off the clutch nut (held by two set screws) until forward spring starts t o pull carriage forward
Tighten nut just enough to hold carriage in rear position Check by marking sprocket with a pencil and
bending carriage forward and back Sprocket should slip between 5' and 25O Also, briefly stop carriage

In the event that the air check must be replaced or if the cam shaft must be realigned, refer to Illustration
6-11 and note the following Shaft supports along the entire length of the cam shaft must be adjusted so a
minimum torque is required t o rotate the shaft through 360' Couplings must be aligned so they are
squarely but not tightly, engaged Sufficient clearance must be allowed at coupling to prevent binding
during solenoid actuation Rotation of solenoid by the nature of its design requires some axial travel
Too tight a setting can cause overloading of solenoid and faulty sequencing
Also there must be no thrust transmitted to S30 when the cassette carriage hits a forward stop Therefore,
adjust S30 and/or the shaft support bracket position so that impact is absorbed by the shoulder on the
shaft and bushing on bracket adjacent to S30 After alignment is complete apply Cindol No 2302 grease
to the square shaft and groove a t stop E (or stop D) end Apply a light oil to the round shaft a t the Stop

MOMENTARY SPOT FILM TRANSFER AFTER CASSETTE CARRIAGE
RETURNS TO PARKED POSITION
On front load Model 9D1 only a momentary spot film transfer will occur when the cassette carriage returns to
the parked position This must be correctedi
The problem occurs because of a delay between the opening of 3S26A by the cassette carriage returning t o park
and the opening of 3S27 after SOL3 is deenergized Opening 3S26A drops out the SPOT FILM TRANSFER
INTERLOCK RELAY (2K4 or 2K1) closing its N C contact in the Exposureand Spot Film Transfer Circuits
Since 3TB3 K11A is still closed the resutt is a momentary spot film transfer until3TB3 K11 de-energizes and

6-1 General Troubleshooting Procedures E
As electronic equipment increases in sophistication, the role of the electronic technician becomes more
challenging Still, the technician gains his greatest satisfaction when he successfully repairs the equipment,
and is confident that the equipment delivers i t s best possible performance Here are seven steps t o
troubleshooting which will help you repair any electronic device
1 Know the equipment What is i t s function’ What are the operator controls’ Where are components
located’ If you don t know find out1 Read the manual Ask questions When in doubt scream for help
2 Verify the fault Should the equipment do that’ Does the fault appear in all modes of operation’ Is it
repeatable, or intermittent’
3 If a fault exists somethrng is wrong This simple rule is easy t o lose sight of after a prolonged search for
an elusive fault
4 Check the operator controls Which controls are working’ Has something been missed’ Get a feel” for
device operation
5 Check the power supplies Verify all DC supplies are present and normal
6 Divide and conquer Check major signal paths a t a convenient half-way point Is the signal present or
absent a t that point’ Repeated half divisions of signal paths leads t o the quickest repair
7 Confidence How much confidence do you have in yourself’ In your test equipment’ In your test leads7
Confidence makes the previous six steps work for you
Twelve troubleshooting charts are provided t o assist in the identification of a defective component or
assembly Each chart provides a l i s t of electrical and mechanica components lse them t o check for a specific
problem or symptom
After placing a component as directed by the troubleshooting charts, stop and retest the system
CAUTION All test connections should be made with the POWER OFF
CAUTION Some ofthe troubleshooting checks will cause x-ray radiation Proper precautions must be used
t o avoid exposure t o x-ray radiation when performing these checks
The following tools are required t o perform the spot-film device troubleshooting and repair checks
Screwdriver
