2 INTRODUCTION À L’HISTOIRE DES MATHÉMATIQUES
I have used an artifice [artificio] similar to that often used by algebraists for
solving problems. For however ineffable, absurd and unknown the roots of numbers
be, they none the less add, subtract, multiply and divide them ; and they are
convinced of having sufficiently met their obligations when they have succeeded in
finding out from the given problem the result which was required. Not differently,
therefore, it is legitimate for me to make use – in order to investigate measure of
continua – of the congeries of indivisibles, either of lines or planes, [. . . ] for if are
nameless, absurd and unknown with respect to their number, their magnitude is
enclosed in well-defined limits.

rapport) ;
• propriété additive :
= F 1 + F2
F ≥ =∆ OF (l) = OF1 (l) + OF2 (l);
= F2
F1 ≥ =∆ OF1 (l) = OF2 (l).
’l1 œ OF1 (l), l2 œ OF2 (l) tels que l1 : l2 = k =∆ OF1 (l) : OF2 (l) = k;
’l1 œ OF1 (l), l2 œ OF2 (l) tels que l1 : l2 = base1 : base2 =∆ F1 : F2 = base1 : base2
