« Ce deuxième album intitulé « NOVA
RUPTA » se place dans le prolongement
d’une recherche esthétique initiée
sur le précédent, autour du concept
de musique cinématique. Il me
semble que toute forme de vie est
souffle et mouvement. En tant que
compositeur, en tant que musicien
et tout simplement en tant qu’être
humain, je suis en perpétuelle
quête de souffle, de mouvement
ou d’émotion, deux termes qui
étymologiquement se rejoignent.
Qu’il s’agisse du mouvement céleste
animant notre cosmos (Medicea
Sidera), du mouvement de la course
des athlètes aux Jeux Olympiques
(Shapes and Shadows) ou encore du
mouvement tellurique qui sculpte
la surface du globe (Nova Rupta,
Sismograf), j’aime traduire ces sources
d’inspiration à travers mon travail de
compositeur. Les nouveaux morceaux
de « NOVA RUPTA » visent une épure
mélodique, un souci de dramaturgie
dans l’évolution des pièces, dans leur
orchestration et dans leurs nuances.
Ils préservent naturellement des plages
d’improvisation libre où le musicien
soliste peut construire son propre
paysage musical en mouvement. »

This second album called “ NOVA RUPTA “
follows up an aesthetic research initiated
on the first one, around the concept
of cinematic music. In other words a
music that privileges narration and the
development of motifs, a music based
on the use of ostinati, of repeating cells,
of polyrhythms or asymmetrical metrics.
It seems to me that every form of life is
breath and movement. As a composer,
as a musician and simply as a human
being, I am in the perpetual quest for
breath, movement or emotion, two
words that meet up etymologically.
Whether it is the celestial movement
that drives our cosmos (Medicea
Sidera), the movement of the race of
athletes at the Olympic Games (Shapes
and Shadows) or the telluric movement
that fashions the surface of the Earth
(Nova Rupta, Sismograf), I enjoy
reflecting these sources of inspiration
through my work as a composer. The
new pieces on “ NOVA RUPTA “
aim for a melodic purity, a concern for
drama in the evolution of the pieces, in
their orchestration and in their nuances.
They naturally keep intermissions of free
improvisation where the soloist musician
can build his own musical landscape in
motion.

Le titre de l’album, « NOVA RUPTA », désigne un volcan des Etats-Unis situé en
Alaska, dont l’éruption en 1912 fut l’une des plus puissantes du XXe siècle.
En latin, NOVA RUPTA signifie « nouvelle éruption », et cela correspond très
bien à ce que j’ai ressenti en composant les titres de ce deuxième opus.
La figure de l’éruption volcanique évoque autant l’idée d’un enthousiasme
créatif, que les mouvements telluriques à l’origine du surgissement de ces
volcans, aussi dangereux que fascinants. Il y a aussi un clin d’œil, un écho à
mon histoire familiale, partagée entre les volcans d’Auvergne et ceux de la
péninsule italienne. »

The title of the album, “ NOVA RUPTA “, refers to an American volcano in

Alaska, whose eruption in 1912 was one of the most powerful of the Twentieth
century. In Latin, Nova Rupta means “new eruption”, and that really fits in with
what I felt while composing the titles of this second opus. The figure of the
volcanic eruption evokes as much the idea of a creative enthusiasm, as the
telluric movements that caused the sudden emergence of those volcanoes,
as dangerous as they are fascinating. There is also an implied reference to
my family history divided between the Auvergne volcanoes and those of the
Italian peninsula.
