Faire connaissance dire la nationalite (Get to know each other, say your nationality)
Most countries whose name ends in “e” are feminine, such as la France, la Belgique, la Côte d’Ivoire (in
this one, côte is the key word).
La Réunion is feminine, because “-ion” is a feminine ending (la nation, la population, etc.)
A few countries whose name ends in “e” are masculine: Le Mexique, le Cambodge. Here are some more
masculine ones: le Portugal, le Canada, le Maroc. I think if you counted up all the country names in
French, you would find that there are more feminine ones, and most end in “e.”
These countries are plural: les Etats Unis, les Pays Bas, les Philippines. Notice that they are all plural in
English, too: the United States, the Netherlands, the Philippines.
In French, words have gender. Usually, but not always, if the word ends in “e” or “ion” then is feminine.,
thus use “La”.
If the “e” has a written accent (“é”) then is probably masculine, so use “Le”.
In regards of countries, most countries that end in “e” are feminine with only 6 exceptions:
Also, and this is very important, if the country starts with a vowel, then use “L’” Example:
- l'Afghanistan (masculine)
- l'Argentine (feminine)
- l'Éthiopie (feminine)
Lastly, some countries do not have an article at all. Most of these countries are islands:
- Cuba
- Chypre
- Kiribati
- Madagascar
