LES ARTICLES INDÉFINIS (THE INDEFINITE ARTICLES)

In French, when indicating an unspecific, general, unidentified noun, we use

the indefinite articles un, une and des. This is where we use a or an in English.

Un - masculine (singular)
Une - feminine (singular)
Des - masculine and feminine (plural)

UN UNE

livre - book chaise - chair

cahier - notebook table - table

tableau - board calculatrice - calculator

stylo - pen règle - ruler

crayon - pencil gomme - eraser

ordinateur - laptop trousse - pencil case

sac - bag lumière - light

PLURAL OF NOUNS

In French, there is a plural form for un and une, and it is des. Although it does not
exist in English, its use in French is obligatory. Let's transform some of the
examples above into the plural.

un livre (a book) - des livres (books)

un sac (a bag) - des sacs (bags)
un ordinateur (a computer) - des ordinateurs (computers)
une chaise (a chair) - des chaises (chairs)
une table (a table) - des tables (tables)
LE GENRE (GENDER)

THE GENDER OF NOUNS

In French, everything has gender, that is, everything is either masculine or

feminine. How do you know a word's gender? Is it by the object's
appearance? No. Is it by its function or use? No.

It's easy! It's by looking at the endings of words. A quick giveaway is that
most words ending with the letter E are feminine. Again, most. There are
exceptions just like un livre and un téléphone.

Here are some common masculine and feminine endings by which you will
be able to tell a word's gender.

MASCULINE ENDINGS FEMININE ENDINGS

-eau un bateau -ion une réunion

-al un cheval -té une université

-et un bouquet -ille une famille

- age un village -ise une friandise

-ail un détail -ette une baguette

-ement un gouvernement -ée une cheminée

-er un boucher -ie une boulangerie
-isme le socialisme
-elle une demoiselle
