Jeunesse et formation
Booker T. Washington[2] est né esclave, d'un père inconnu[3],
probablement blanc et d'une mère esclave afro-américaine, dans
une ferme du Sud-Ouest de la Virginie[4].
Carrière
Vie privée
1882 : il épouse Fanny Smith, qui décède en 1884, ils ont une
fille
1884 : il épouse Olivia Davidson, ils ont deux fils (Booker T.
Washington Jr. et Ernest Davidson Washington).elle décède en
1889
1892 : il épouse Margaret Murray, le couple adopte Laura
Murray, une nièce orpheline de Margaret.
Il repose au cimetière du campus de l'université de Tuskegee aux
côtés de ses épouses et de ses enfants[12].

Postérité
Le 4 novembre 2008, le sénateur John McCain, défait à l'élection
présidentielle face au candidat métis Barack Obama, a fait
référence à Booker T. Washington, dans son discours de clôture
de la campagne. Comme le veut la tradition américaine, dans un
paragraphe, John McCain fait l'éloge de la victoire de son
adversaire vainqueur, qui se trouve être le premier président des
États-Unis d'Amérique d'origine métisse. Dans cet éloge il met en
relief qu'il aura fallu une centaine d'années entre l'invitation
officielle à la Maison-Blanche de Booker T. Washington et
l'élection de Barack Obama.
