Other, Others, The Other et Another

Vous avez certainement remarqué en lisant des textes en anglais que

parfois le mot other ne prend pas de S, et parfois si. Aussi, nous
entendons parfois other et parfois another.
Qu’en est-il, faut-il mettre un S à other(s) ? Et quand doit-on utiliser
another plutôt que other ? C’est ce que nous allons voir dans ce petit
cours.
Eh oui, il y a bien des différences entre other, others, the other et
another. Mais elles sont faciles à comprendre.
Commençons avec la signification du mot OTHER :

Other veut dire « autre«, tout simplement.

Par exemple : The other day = L’autre jour.
Dans cette phrase – the other day – OTHER est adjectif. Or en anglais,
les adjectifs ne prennent PAS de S, ils sont invariables.
Donc au pluriel, cela nous donne : The other days = Les autres jours.
OTHER ne prend jamais de S dans ce cas.
La question que vous vous posez probablement est donc « pourquoi voit-
on parfois other avec un S ? »

Others
Et bien parfois, OTHER est utilisé différemment : comme pronom.
Par exemple dans cette phrase : Did you meet the others ? = As-tu
rencontré les autres ?
Dans ce cas, nous pouvons le mettre au pluriel, et other(s) prend un S.
Souvent, nous utiliserons OTHERS avec un S pour éviter une répétition.
Par exemple : You met some of the family members, but did you
meet all the other family members ? (Tu as rencontré quelques
membres de la famille, mais as-tu rencontré les autres membres de la
famille ?). Nous avons une répétition de « family members » ici.
Il aurait été possible d’écrire plutôt : You met some of the family
members, but did you meet all the others ? (Tu as rencontré quelques
membres de la famille, mais as-tu rencontré les autres ?).
The others peut souvent être remplacé par « the other things » ou
« the other people« . Dans l’exemple précédent, nous pouvons
remplacer « the others » par « the other family members« .
Voici quelques exemples qui récapitulent tout cela pour que ce soit
plus clair :
– The other persons = Les autres personnes
– The other keys = Les autres clés
Dans ces deux cas, PAS de S.
Mais :
– Where are the others ? = Où sont les autres ?
– Do you know the others ? = Connais-tu les autres ?
Dans ces cas-là, nous mettons un S à OTHER quand il est au pluriel.

Différence entre other et another.

Maintenant, voyons la différence entre other et another.
Another signifie « an other« , c’est-à-dire « un autre« .
De ce fait, la différence entre other et another est la même différence
qu’entre autre et un autre.
Prenons deux exemples :
– Take my book, I have another one at home = Prends mon livre, j’en
ai un autre à la maison.
Ou encore :
– I’ll have another pint of beer please = Je vais prendre une autre
pinte de bière s’il vous plaît.
Quand nous utilisons « another«, cela sous-entend qu’il y avait déjà un
ou plusieurs éléments avant. Dans le premier exemple, il s’agissait d’un
livre (book), dans le deuxième, « another beer » sous-entend que la
personne a déjà bu une autre bière avant.

Exemple avec OTHERS, OTHER et ANOTHER dans la même phrase :

Most of the others consider that the other beer is better, but I’ll
have another pint of this one please. –> La plupart des autres
considèrent que l’autre bière est meilleure, mais je vais prendre une autre
pinte de celle-ci, s’il vous plaît.

* EVERY OTHER DAY : Soyez prudents en utilisant 'every other...'. Il

peut signifier 'all the others' mais il peut aussi vouloir dire 'un sur deux'.
ex : I can't imagine why you haven't got your book. Every other boy has
got one = (All the other boys.) = Je ne comprends pas pourquoi tu n'as
pas ton livre. Tous les autres l'ont !
ex : Every other day of the week could mean, for example, Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday. = 'Un jour sur deux' pourrait vouloir dire, par
exemple, lundi, mercredi, et vendredi. ...

* ON THE ONE HAND, ON THE OTHER HAND ... : est une expression
employée quand vous comparez deux éléments différents d'une situation :
ex : On the one hand, I love her deeply, but on the other hand, I can' t
bear our daily routine ! I'm going to snap... = D'un côté, je l'aime
profondément, mais d'un autre côté, je ne supporte plus notre routine
quotidienne ! Je vais craquer ...
