It is important to first recognize the two major periods of the day in French. These periods are
morning and evening.
Note that, the expression “Bonne après midi” is an African way of saying “good afternoon”.
Le matin [Morning]
Monsieur [Mr]

Comment ca va? How are you [Familiar form when the persons exchanging greetings and
Nike: Bonjour Joyce, comment ça va aujourd’hui? [Good morning Joyce, how do you do today?]
Joyce: Bonjour Nike, je vais bien, merci, et toi? [Good morning Nike, how do you do today?]
Comment allez-vous? How are you [Official or a sign of respect to one another]
Le soir [Evening]
Au revoir Madame
Au revoir Monsieur.
However, regardless of the time of the day, when a French person sees you for the first time in
the day, he greets:
The greeting form here is « Bonsoir » which means « Good evening » or « Good day »
