Generally, a sentence has 3 parts - Subject + Verb + Object. Here we are discussing Direct Object.
Identification :
Ø The DO (direct object) noun comes after the verb (sometimes adverb).
Ø It answers the question “Who” (Qui) or “What” (Quoi) asked after the verb.
Ø The DO replaces the nouns which are with
• Definite articles (le / la / es)
Eg. Pierre écrit bien la lettre.
Substitution :
The following are the Direct Object Pronouns in French :
Me / m’ (moi*) Me Nous Us
Te / t’ (toi*) You Vous You
Le / L’ Him / it Les Them
La / L’ Her / it Les Them
Replacement :
• Generally, the nouns are replaced with - le (M.S), la (F.S) and les (M.Pl & F.Pl).
• Le and La change to L’ when followed by a vowel (a, e, i, o, u, h, y).
• When the Direct Objet includes the words – « ________ et moi » or « ________ et toi », the noun will
be replaced by the pronoun « Nous » and « Vous » respectively.
Placement :
1. Always place the DO before the full infinitive.
Eg 1. Elle veut voir ces films.
- Elle veut les voir.

2. If the sentence does not contain a full infinitive, place the DO before the conjugated verb.
Eg 1. Pierre porte son T-shirt bleu.
- Pierre le porte.
3. In the Imperative Affirmative, place the DO immediately after the verb with a hyphen in
between. (‘Me’ will change to ‘moi’ and ‘te’ will change to ‘toi’).
Eg 1. Écrivez les phrases complètes.
- Écrivez-les.
5. With ‘Voici’ and ‘Voilà’, the DO is placed before « Voici » and « Voilà » respectively.
Eg 1. Voici tes stylos.
- Les voici.
