Question Tags

(1) DEFITION

Question tags (questions étiquettes, questions clichés), sont de petites questions

posées après un énoncé ou une déclaration pour susciter ou solliciter de son
interlocuteur une approbation, une adhésion, confirmation ou une infirmation.

Les ‘tag questions’ correspondent au français “n’est-ce pas?”, “non?”, “pas vrai?”,
etc.

o That’s not really difficult, is it ?

=> Ce n’est vraiment pas difficile, n’est-ce pas ?
o It seems that it is going to rain, isn’t it ?
=> On dirait qu’il va pleuvoir, non ?

(2) USE/FORM
Les ‘question tags’ sont essentiellement utilisés dans un discours quand on veut :

• confirmer que quelque chose est vrai ou pas, ou

• susciter une réponse de la part de son interlocuteur.

Si la phrase pricipale est à la forme affirmative, le question tag sera à la forme

négative.
 Affirmative Sentence/ Negative Tag

• You are Tom, aren’t you?

• Mike can play the piano, can't he?
• It's a lovely day, isn't it?
• You will go there, won't you?

Le negative tag est TOUJOURS contracté: aren’t, can't, isn't, won't

Si la phrase principale est à la forme négative, le question tag sera à la forme

affirmative.
 Negative Sentence/ Affirmative Tag

• He isn’t Joe, is he?

• She can't cook, can she?
• You didn't do your homework, did you?
• You won't see her, will you?

(3) MODALS
Avec les Question tags, les modaux (verbes de modalité) suivent le même modèle
que les auxiliaires :

• She must help him, mustn’t she?

• He will tell me, won’t he?
• They should study for the test, shouldn’t they?
• It can’t be true, can it?

(4) Without Auxiliaries

Si la phrase principale n’a pas d’auxiliaire, « TO DO » est l’auxiliaire par défaut qu’on
utilise automatiquement dans ce cas :

• She left last Friday, didn’t she?

• He works in your company, doesn’t he?
• You don’t know him, do you?

(5) CAS PARTICULIERS

 I AM (1st person singular)

o I'm late, aren't I?

o I am right, aren’t I?
o I'm talking to the walls, aren't I?

 SUGGESTIONS

Après une phrase principale avec « Let's... » le question tag se forme avec "shall we?"

o Let's go out for a walk, shall we?

o Let's study tomorrow morning, shall we?

 IMPERATIVE & SUGGESTIONS

o Don't smoke in this room, will you?

o Open the door, will you?
o Take a seat, won’t you? (polite invitation)
o Close the door, would you? (quite polite)

 THERE

o There wasn't a lion in the park, was there?

o There are two cats in the roof, aren't there?
