Quatuors pour cordes
Comme Mozart et Mendelssohn avant lui, Camille Saint-
Saëns fut un enfant d’une remarquable précocité
musicale, qui se manifesta alors qu’il n’avait que deux ans
et demi, dès les premières leçons de piano que lui donna
sa grand-tante. En plus de s’intéresser à la musique, il
s’enthousiasmait pour toutes sortes de matières littéraires
et scientifiques, et durant sa carrière de compositeur, il
allait produire des pages dans les genres les plus variés au
fil d’un parcours englobant la seconde moitié du XIXe
siècle et les deux premières décennies du XXe, depuis
l’époque de Mendelssohn jusqu’après la disparition de
Debussy.

redécouverte de pages de compositeurs plus anciens.
Membre du cercle de Pauline Viardot, l’une de ses
proches amies, Saint-Saëns enseigna brièvement à l’Ecole
Niedermeyer nouvellement fondée, où il eut pour élève
Gabriel Fauré, musicien avec lequel il entretint une
relation suivie. En 1871, après la débâcle de la guerre
franco-prussienne, il fut l’un des fondateurs de la Société
Nationale de Musique, qui avait pour but la diffusion de
la musique française, l’Ars Gallica. Sa grand-tante
mourut en 1872, et trois ans plus tard, il contracta un
mariage qui s’acheva brutalement au bout de six ans, à la

suite du décès prématuré de ses deux fils. Quand sa mère
mourut, en 1888, il se retrouva seul et passa une bonne
partie du reste de sa vie à voyager, accompagné de son
chien et d’un loyal serviteur. Lorsqu’il s’éteignit à son
tour en Algérie en 1921, sa réputation en France s’était
pour ainsi dire éteinte avant lui. Son pays était désormais
à l’heure des Six. Debussy n’était plus, Fauré n’allait pas
tarder à mourir à son tour, et il y avait déjà près de huit
ans que Stravinsky avait scandalisé Paris avec son Sacre
du Printemps. Saint-Saëns continuait de composer, même
si Ravel insinua peu charitablement qu’il aurait pu
participer de façon plus productive à l’effort de guerre.
A l’étranger, sa célébrité d’antan ne s’était pas encore
démentie. Autrefois connu comme « le Mendelssohn
français », il avait composé des pages qui séduisaient le
public un peu à la manière de son devancier, et ses
textures limpides et son attrayante inventivité visaient
plus à ravir qu’à choquer ses auditeurs.
Ce n’est que très tard dans sa vie que Saint-Saëns
releva enfin le défi posé par la forme du quatuor pour
cordes. Il écrivit son Quatuor à cordes en mi mineur op.
112 en 1899, à l’âge de soixante-quatre ans, et le dédia à
Eugène Ysaÿe qui, lui exprimant sa gratitude pour
l’honneur qu’il lui faisait, fit le vœu de composer de
nouvelles œuvres du même type. Le quatuor fut créé en
décembre lors d’un concert Colonne. Vincent d’Indy
devait l’utiliser dans son Cours de composition musicale
afin d’illustrer la forme cyclique qui, selon lui, était bien
mieux traitée par César Franck. Le premier mouvement
débute sur des notes tenues avec sourdines, puis le
premier violon énonce le thème principal. Le passage
s’achève sur des notes tenues, et les sourdines sont
retirées pour une section Più allegro où le premier violon
continue de mener le jeu. Du matériau nouveau est
introduit avant le retour final abrégé du thème principal,
suivi d’une musique découlant du Più allegro. Dans le
second mouvement, Molto allegro quasi presto, le
premier violon joue une mélodie toute simple, d’abord
syncopée, puis sur des triolets, accompagnée par les
pizzicati des autres instruments. La section de Trio du
mouvement module vers mi majeur, proposant une fugue
lancée par le violoncelle et suivi par les autres instru-
ments, du plus grave au plus aigu. Le Scherzo reparaît,
ouvrant la voie à une autre brève section fuguée, marquée
poco meno, avant que le thème principal ne vienne clore
le mouvement. Le mouvement lent en la majeur fait la
part belle au premier violon, reflétant le jeu d’Ysaÿe. La
partie de premier violon du dernier mouvement laisse
elle aussi la virtuosité s’épanouir, avec ses deux groupes
thématiques contrastés et son Molto allegro conclusif.
Il semble que le deuxième des deux quatuors pour
cordes de Saint-Saëns, le Quatuor à cordes en sol majeur
op. 153, ait été achevé en 1918. Il fut publié l’année
suivante, avec une dédicace à Jacques Durand, qui avait
pris la suite de son père Auguste en qualité d’éditeur de
Saint-Saëns. Les temps étaient alors difficiles. La guerre
touchait à sa fin, mais seulement après des années de
grande souffrance et de pertes amères dans les deux
camps. Saint-Saëns était toujours angoissé par les
éventuelles répercussions du conflit et par la montée du
socialisme en France. Dans son quatuor, il revient d’abord
à un langage musical tout à fait dans l’esprit de Mozart.
Pour lui, le premier mouvement était « La jeunesse » et
le second ce qu’il y a de plus triste : l’envol de celle-ci.
Le premier mouvement s’ouvre sur une figure rythmique
dont l’importance ne diminuera pas, menant ici à un
thème auquel le violoncelle fournit un accompagnement
occasionnel avec le même dessin. A mesure que le
mouvement se poursuit, l’on rencontre des modulations

et davantage de matériau thématique. Enfin, c’est un
retour au thème initial, qui forme la substance de la
section conclusive. Le mouvement lent, que Saint-Saëns,
avec son humour pince-sans-rire habituel, décrivait

comme d’un ennui mortel ainsi que doit l’être toutAdagio
qui se respecte, débute en ut mineur et avec l’indication
Molto adagio, mais cette première section ne tarde pas à
être suivie d’un passage Andantino, marqué cantabile et
écrit en ré bémol majeur. Le retour du premier tempo
marque une nouvelle modulation, et le mouvement se
poursuit avec une alternance d’Adagio et d’Andantino.
Fine Arts Quartet
Finalement, une première cadence de violon mène à un
retour de l’Adagio, en ut mineur, suivi d’un Andantino en
ut majeur, couronné de quatre mesures d’Adagio
conclusives. Le troisième mouvement débute par un
Interlude où une mélodie d’alto, marquée Andantino, est
accompagnée par le deuxième violon et le violoncelle.
Les cordes à vide pincées du premier violon, auxquelles
celles de l’alto et du violoncelle font écho, introduisent
le Finale proprement dit, Allegretto con moto, dont la
mélodie principale est fondée sur une série de quintes
ascendantes. Le mouvement comprend une section
fuguée animato construite sur un long sujet de doubles
croches, précédant le retour de l’Allegretto. Les deux
éléments thématiques sont évoqués dans la section finale
du mouvement, les trois derniers accords étant précédés

Like Mozart and Mendelssohn, Camille Saint-Saëns
showed remarkable precocity as a child, first exhibited in
piano lessons from his great-aunt at the age of two and a
half. He coupled with his musical interests a wide general
enthusiasm for learning of all kinds, literary and scientific,
and was, as a composer, to produce music of many genres
during a career that spanned the second half of the
nineteenth century and the first two decades of the
twentieth, starting in a period that knew Mendelssohn and
continuing beyond the death of Debussy.
Saint-Saëns was born in Paris in 1835, the son of a
clerk in the government service, who died shortly after
the birth of his only child. He was cared for by his mother
and her adoptive aunt, whose husband had recently died.
It was she who gave him his first piano lessons. Thereafter
he studied with Camille Stamaty, a pupil of Kalkbrenner
and of Mendelssohn, and appeared in public concerts as
a child, having, by the age of ten, memorised all the
Beethoven piano sonatas. At the same time he showed an
aptitude for and interest in a great variety of subjects. In
1848 he entered the Conservatoire, studying the organ
with Benoist and composition with Halévy, and continuing
to show his gifts as a pianist, organist and composer. His
intellectual curiosity led him to espouse the cause of
contemporary music, as well as the revival of music by
earlier composers.
A member of the circle of Pauline Viardot, a valued
friend, Saint-Saëns taught briefly at the newly established
Ecole Niedermeyer, where his pupils included Gabriel
Fauré, a musician with whom he established a close
relationship. In 1871, after the disasters of the Franco-
Prussian war, he was instrumental in the foundation of
the Société Nationale de Musique, with its aim of
propagating French music, Ars Gallica. His great-aunt
died in 1872 and three years later he contracted a marriage
that came to an abrupt end six years later, after the earlier
death of his two sons. The death of his mother in 1888
left him alone and he spent much of his later life travelling,
accompanied by his dog and a loyal manservant. By the

time of his own death in Algeria in 1921 he had to some
extent outlived his reputation at home. In France this was
the age now of Les Six. Debussy was dead, Fauré was
near the end of his life, and Stravinsky had already, some
eight years earlier, scandalized Paris with his Rite of
Spring. Saint-Saëns continued to compose, although Ravel
unkindly suggested that in war-time he might have been
more productively employed. Abroad he retained some-
thing more of his earlier fame. Once known as the French
Mendelssohn, he had written music that appealed to
audiences in much the same way as his predecessor’s, for
its clarity of texture and its attractive powers of invention,
calculated to delight rather than to shock.
It was not until very late in his life that Saint-Saëns at
last approached the challenging form of the string quartet.
He wrote his String Quartet in E minor, Op. 112, at the age
of 64, in 1899, dedicating it to Eugène Ysaÿe who, in
expressing his gratitude for the honour, went on to hope
that this would be only the first of a series of such
compositions. The work had its first public performance
in December at a Colonne concert. Vincent d’Indy, in his
Cours de composition musicale was to use the quartet as
a supposed example of cyclic form, something that, he
went on to say, was much better handled by César Franck.
The first movement starts with muted sustained notes
before the first violin states the principal theme. The
passage ends with sustained notes and mutes are removed
for a Più allegro section, in which the first violin continues
to predominate. Other material is introduced, before the
final abbreviated return of the principal theme, followed
by music derived from the Più allegro. In the second
movement, Molto allegro quasi presto, the first violin
offers a simple tune, at first syncopated and then in triplets,
accompanied by the plucked notes of the other instru-
ments. The Trio section of the movement modulates to E
major, proposing a fugue, started by the cello and followed
by the other instruments entering in ascending order. The
Scherzo returns, leading the way to another short fugal
section, marked poco meno, before the main theme brings
the movement to an end. The A major slow movement
gives prominence to the first violin, reflecting tne playing
of Ysaÿe. There is further scope for virtuosity in the
writing for the first violin in the final movement, with its
two contrasting thematic groups and closing Molto
allegro.
The second of the two string quartets by Saint-Saëns,
the String Quartet in G major, Op. 153, seems to have
been completed in 1918. It was published the following
year, with a dedication to Jacques Durand, who had
followed his father Auguste as Saint-Saëns’s publisher.
The period was a difficult one. The war was coming to an
end, but only after years of great suffering and loss on
both sides. Saint-Saëns remained troubled too by the
possible aftermath and by anxieties stemming from the
rise of socialism in France. In his quartet he returns at
first to a musical language very much in the spirit of
Mozart. He described the first movement as ‘Youth’ and
the second as the saddest thing of all, the loss of it. The
first movement opens with a rhythmic figure that remains
of importance, leading here to a theme for which the cello
provides an occasional accompaniment with the same
figure. As the movement continues, there are shifts of key
and further thematic material. Finally there is a return to

the opening theme, forming the substance of the closing
section. The slow movement, which Saint-Saëns, with his
usual dry humour, described as deadly dull, as an Adagio
should be, opens in C minor and marked Molto adagio,
but this first section is soon followed by an Andantino
passage, cantabile and in D flat major. The first tempo
returns, with a further modulation, and the movement
continues with an alternation of Adagio and Andantino.
Eventually a first violin cadenza leads to a return to the
Adagio, in C minor, followed by a C major Andantino,

Nationale de Musique, qui avait pour but la diffusion de
la musique française, l’Ars Gallica. Sa grand-tante
mourut en 1872, et trois ans plus tard, il contracta un
mariage qui s’acheva brutalement au bout de six ans, à la

suite du décès prématuré de ses deux fils. Quand sa mère
mourut, en 1888, il se retrouva seul et passa une bonne
partie du reste de sa vie à voyager, accompagné de son
chien et d’un loyal serviteur. Lorsqu’il s’éteignit à son
tour en Algérie en 1921, sa réputation en France s’était
pour ainsi dire éteinte avant lui. Son pays était désormais
à l’heure des Six. Debussy n’était plus, Fauré n’allait pas
tarder à mourir à son tour, et il y avait déjà près de huit
ans que Stravinsky avait scandalisé Paris avec son Sacre
du Printemps. Saint-Saëns continuait de composer, même
si Ravel insinua peu charitablement qu’il aurait pu
participer de façon plus productive à l’effort de guerre.
A l’étranger, sa célébrité d’antan ne s’était pas encore
démentie. Autrefois connu comme « le Mendelssohn
français », il avait composé des pages qui séduisaient le
public un peu à la manière de son devancier, et ses
textures limpides et son attrayante inventivité visaient
plus à ravir qu’à choquer ses auditeurs.
Ce n’est que très tard dans sa vie que Saint-Saëns
releva enfin le défi posé par la forme du quatuor pour
cordes. Il écrivit son Quatuor à cordes en mi mineur op.
112 en 1899, à l’âge de soixante-quatre ans, et le dédia à
Eugène Ysaÿe qui, lui exprimant sa gratitude pour
l’honneur qu’il lui faisait, fit le vœu de composer de
nouvelles œuvres du même type. Le quatuor fut créé en
décembre lors d’un concert Colonne. Vincent d’Indy
devait l’utiliser dans son Cours de composition musicale
afin d’illustrer la forme cyclique qui, selon lui, était bien
mieux traitée par César Franck. Le premier mouvement
débute sur des notes tenues avec sourdines, puis le
premier violon énonce le thème principal. Le passage
s’achève sur des notes tenues, et les sourdines sont
retirées pour une section Più allegro où le premier violon
continue de mener le jeu. Du matériau nouveau est
introduit avant le retour final abrégé du thème principal,
suivi d’une musique découlant du Più allegro. Dans le
second mouvement, Molto allegro quasi presto, le
premier violon joue une mélodie toute simple, d’abord
syncopée, puis sur des triolets, accompagnée par les
pizzicati des autres instruments. La section de Trio du
mouvement module vers mi majeur, proposant une fugue
lancée par le violoncelle et suivi par les autres instru-
ments, du plus grave au plus aigu. Le Scherzo reparaît,
ouvrant la voie à une autre brève section fuguée, marquée
poco meno, avant que le thème principal ne vienne clore
le mouvement. Le mouvement lent en la majeur fait la
part belle au premier violon, reflétant le jeu d’Ysaÿe. La
partie de premier violon du dernier mouvement laisse
elle aussi la virtuosité s’épanouir, avec ses deux groupes
thématiques contrastés et son Molto allegro conclusif.
Il semble que le deuxième des deux quatuors pour
cordes de Saint-Saëns, le Quatuor à cordes en sol majeur
op. 153, ait été achevé en 1918. Il fut publié l’année
suivante, avec une dédicace à Jacques Durand, qui avait
pris la suite de son père Auguste en qualité d’éditeur de
Saint-Saëns. Les temps étaient alors difficiles. La guerre
touchait à sa fin, mais seulement après des années de
grande souffrance et de pertes amères dans les deux
camps. Saint-Saëns était toujours angoissé par les
éventuelles répercussions du conflit et par la montée du
socialisme en France. Dans son quatuor, il revient d’abord
à un langage musical tout à fait dans l’esprit de Mozart.
Pour lui, le premier mouvement était « La jeunesse » et
le second ce qu’il y a de plus triste : l’envol de celle-ci.
Le premier mouvement s’ouvre sur une figure rythmique
dont l’importance ne diminuera pas, menant ici à un
thème auquel le violoncelle fournit un accompagnement
occasionnel avec le même dessin. A mesure que le
mouvement se poursuit, l’on rencontre des modulations

et davantage de matériau thématique. Enfin, c’est un
retour au thème initial, qui forme la substance de la
section conclusive. Le mouvement lent, que Saint-Saëns,
avec son humour pince-sans-rire habituel, décrivait

String Quartets
comme d’un ennui mortel ainsi que doit l’être toutAdagio
qui se respecte, débute en ut mineur et avec l’indication
Molto adagio, mais cette première section ne tarde pas à
être suivie d’un passage Andantino, marqué cantabile et
écrit en ré bémol majeur. Le retour du premier tempo
marque une nouvelle modulation, et le mouvement se
poursuit avec une alternance d’Adagio et d’Andantino.
Fine Arts Quartet
Finalement, une première cadence de violon mène à un
retour de l’Adagio, en ut mineur, suivi d’un Andantino en
ut majeur, couronné de quatre mesures d’Adagio
conclusives. Le troisième mouvement débute par un
Interlude où une mélodie d’alto, marquée Andantino, est
accompagnée par le deuxième violon et le violoncelle.
Les cordes à vide pincées du premier violon, auxquelles
celles de l’alto et du violoncelle font écho, introduisent
le Finale proprement dit, Allegretto con moto, dont la
mélodie principale est fondée sur une série de quintes
ascendantes. Le mouvement comprend une section
fuguée animato construite sur un long sujet de doubles
croches, précédant le retour de l’Allegretto. Les deux
éléments thématiques sont évoqués dans la section finale
du mouvement, les trois derniers accords étant précédés
par les quintes des cordes pincées à vide.
