SECTION C READING COMPREHENSION 10 MARKS
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions below it
Lost in a foreign land
About 1,000 people of Africa descent live in the state of Gujarat in Western India. They are
known as Sidis. Not do they only live in great poverty, but they have suffered from the fate of
having forgotten their past. Most Sidis do not know where their ancestors come from, nor do
they know any African language. In the Gujarati village of Jumbur on the Western end of
India, any visitor will find this unusual village. The Sidis live in mud houses and many of
their children have skin infections or eye diseases; the place where they live is full of smell of
poverty.
In the village fish markets, women speak in Gujurati. The children play cricket and shout in
Gujarati on the lawns while the old men pass the whole time of the day, squatting by the tea
stall in the square next to the mosque, conversing in Gujurati. The Sidis are different because
of their looks; their hair as well as their facial features are different from that of the other
Indians.
Jambur is one of the two Gujurati villages of the head that it would have been better if the
migration from Africa had never happened.
“Look at our miserable homes”, he says, sitting on the doorstep of his own ramshackle house.
“We go hungry here. We are very unhappy. We don’t have proper shelter and we have so
many other problems”.
It seems that the Sidis came to Gujurat not in one migration, , but by bit by bit, perhaps from
different parts of Africa. That may explain why they look so different from other Indians.
Their ancestors were probably brought to India as slaves or bodyguards. “Our forebears came
from Africa, but we don’t exactly know which country”, confesses an old patriarch. “Our
ancestors knew. But we were born here. We have no record populated exclusively by the
Sidis. The village headman, Faqir Mohammed, confides with a sad shake of our African
past”. That is definitely true. The dances they perform are like African dances, with their
painted faces, colourful costumes and exuberant drum beat. The Sidis live in a dilemma. They
have lost their African identity, but they are not accepted by the other Gujaratis as fully
Indian.

Hoskins confirmed that the nature of the killing pointed to a ritual killing which was common
in southern Africa and among the Koruba in Ghana, Benin and Nigeria. Hoskins was sure that
the dumping of the body in the river and the orange colour of the shorts were ritually
significant. Oshun, the Koruba river goddess, is said to be associated with orange colour. The
forensic team had also discovered tiny clay pulled with specks of gold and ground bones in
Adam’s small intestines. Hoskins confirmed that the concoction in Adam’s stomach was
typical of those used for preparing ritual killings in sub-Saharan Africa.

Who could say this but Amadou Lamine Sall- Senegal’s and probably Francophone Africa’s
most talented living poet? Indeed, Sall acquired from his spiritual mentor and close friend- the
late Senegalese President and celebrated poet, Léopold Sédar Senghor- not only the love of
poetry, but also the delicate art of it. In one of his volumes, Kamandalu, Sall proudly claims
his quest for intellectual ascent through the only path he has made available to himself.
My hunger,
My great hunger is,
Will always be called poetry.
Sall is the jealous custodian of the creative and rhythmic temple where Senghor once
majestically and lyrically preached- and reigned. And when Senghor died in 2001, Sall,
whose literary career always seems to reflect a permanent and still unfinished conversation
with the former Senegalese President, hailed his hero in a little masterpiece, Sédar’s celestial
wedding:
In the same poem, Sall acknowledges the huge poetic and political legacy of the late President
to the whole nation:
This poetic dialogue between Sall, one of the few African poets to have been awarded the
prestigious Grand prix de l’Académie Française in 1991, and Senghor sums it all up: even
after his death, Senghor remains the reference point for poets in Senegal and Francophone
Africa as a whole.
But what is next? Will the ever- celebrated Alexandrines survive Senghor and his spiritual
son? Will Dakar remain the head from which every poetic beat will have to sound to be
heard? What about other Francophone African countries? Are their lands as fertile as the
Senegalese soil when it comes to giving birth to literary geniuses?
Congo-Brazzaville once came close to Senegal, producing the likes of Soni Labu Tansi and
Thcicaya U’Tamsi- an old generation of writers who took their country to envied heights. It is
also the country of the other Grand prix de l’ Académie Française laureate- Jean Baptiste Tati-
Loutard, who is now a government Minister and the president of the country’s writers’
association. Congo- Brazzaville and Senegal share a common political heritage, which
probably contributed to their achievements in the world of poetry. Before independence in the
‘60s, they were the capitals for the two French colonial empires on the continent- French
Equatorial Africa and French West Africa.

TASK: Reading a text and providing answers to the questions
Read the text below and answer the questions.
Many tourists I have met have told me that one place they have to go is the weekend
market. This market is huge and has everything from bags, souvenirs and handicrafts to many
kinds of animals and many kinds of plants. It also has a fantastic variety of local food. In other
words, the weekend market is a great place for shopping and experiencing the local culture.
The market is located near the city's main bus station so people come from all over the
country to buy and sell goods. Moreover, it is also near a train station and a bus station which
makes it very convenient for city people, especially young people who don't have cars. The
market is very large and full of hundreds of small shops and stalls. Consequently, it can be
confusing to get around. However, if you get lost, it is a good idea to look for the clock tower
which is right in the middle of the market. It will help you find your way.
When I walk into the market early on a Sunday morning there are people and cars and
motorcycles everywhere. You have to be careful where you walk. Many people are bringing
their goods to sell in big bags on carts and trolleys. In fact, you might even have to jump out of
the sellers way as they charge along the narrow walkways with their goods. In addition to the
sellers, tourists and locals are pouring in looking for something to eat or ready to start shopping.
As time goes by, the market gets more and more crowded and you have to start squeezing past
people to keep moving. To sum up, a day at the weekend market is both a day of shopping and
a unique experience for your senses. It is a kind of magical journey that is great as a First
experience for tourists and an escape from daily life for locals. Moreover, while it is usually hot
and crowded, the atmosphere is friendly and good-natured. As you walk through the market
you will experience many sensations. For example, there are many smells, scents and aromas.
One moment you will be smelling the aromas of stir-fried dishes from a small restaurant and
the next you smell the scents of orchids and other Flowers as you pass through the cooler and
more relaxing garden section. Furthermore, walking deeper into the market, your eyes will have
trouble recording so many products with their many colors, designs and sizes. After a while you
may feel dizzy and look for a quiet place to have a rest and a refreshing drink. Fortunately, there
are many small cafes and drink stalls selling fresh coconut juice, orange juice or iced water.
