Teacher’s Instructions
STEP DESCRIPTION TIME
1 Divide students into pairs
Either: Students read the situation
2 OR 1 minute
Teacher reads the situation aloud
Encourage pairs to:
Evaluate the 5 options.
3 Interact with their partner. 3-5 minutes
Justify their arguments.
(If necessary, remind them not to answer the “decide question” yet)
4 Students answer decide question 1-3 minutes
Either: Change pairs.
OR
5 Merge into groups of 4
(this works better if the teacher can monitor the pairs’ decision choice and then
mix them with a group/individual whose decision choice is different)
Students try to convince new partner/group of their decision choice
6 1-3 minutes

Gamification Alternative: Before activity, teacher decides:

1) what he/she considers to be the correct answer and why.
2) what he/she considers to be the second best answer and why.
After students complete activity:
• 2 points for students whose answer matches the teacher’s first
choice!
• 1 point for students whose answer matches the teacher’s second
choice!
