◦ Comment vous vous appelez ? - What is your name? (plural or
formal you)
◦ Comment vous appelez-vous ? What is your name?(plural

TU VS VOUS

◦ Tu means 'you'. It is informal. It is used when speaking to people

you know well, or to children.
◦ Vous means 'you'. It is used either for a group of people, or in a
formal way and as a mark of respect, when referring to a person you
do not know. Do not pronounce the 's'.

COMMENT ÇA VA ?

This means 'How are you?'. There are various ways to ask this
question.

◦ Comment vas-tu ? (informal)

◦ Comment allez-vous ? (formal or plural)
◦ Comment ça va ? (informal)
◦ Ça va ? (informal)
◦ Oui, ça va, merci et toi/et vous ?
◦ Ça va bien ? - Are you ok?
◦ Non, ça va mal - No, I’m not ok.

OÙ HABITES-TU ?

This means 'Where do you live?'. There are several ways to ask this
question.

◦ Où habitez-vous ? (formal or plural)

◦ Où habites-tu ? (informal)

◦ J’habite à (we use à before a town) Londres / à Paris / à New

York / à Sydney, etc.
◦ J’habite en (we use en before a country in the feminine form*) en
Angleterre / en Italie / en Espagne / en France / en Chine / en Inde
/ en Australie.
◦ J’habite au (we use au before a country in the masculine form)
au Portugal / au Japon.
◦ J’habite aux (we use aux before a country in the plural form) aux
États-Unis / aux Antilles.
◦ Je suis français(e)** et je parle français et anglais. Et toi ? Et
vous ? Quelles langues parles-tu/parlez-vous ?
◦ Parlez-vous anglais ? Parlez-vous français ?

*We also use en in front of a masculine country that begins with a

vowel.

** In French, adjectives such as français agree in gender and

number with the noun they describe. This will be explained later on
in the course.
