Passive Voice

RAPPEL
 En anglais, on utilise le passif beaucoup plus souvent qu’en
français. Il peut s’employer à tous les temps, lorsque l’on
ne connait pas le sujet de l’action ou qu’il n’a pas
d’importance ou qu’il est évident. C’est l’action (et ses
conséquences) qui est alors la plus importante, et non
l’auteur de l’action
 Le passif sert donc à mettre en avant une victime ou une
chose qui passe en premier plan. Il peut être suivi du
complément d’agent introduit par « by » quand l’agent
est connu ou important. Le passif correspond souvent à la
traduction du « on » en français.
 Sujet + verbe « be » (conjugué au temps de la voix
active)+ participe passé + by + complément d’agent
Ex : The dog was found dead by the police officer.
 Passive voice and impersonal
structures
 Il existe une construction particulière avec les verbes
de parole (say, believed, considered, expected,
known, thought etc) : On utilise souvent la voix
passive quand on parle de rumeurs, comme on ne
sait pas d’où vient l’information, c'est-à-dire dans
des structures impersonnelles :

He was said to hate his wife. (= on savait qu’il détestait

sa femme)
The dog was supposed to have been killed. (= il est
supposé que le chien était tué)
 Have/get something done
 En anglais on utilise l’expression « have something done » ou
« get something done » pour dire qu’on a trouvé quelqu’un
pour faire le travail pour nous…

Exemples:
Lisa repaired the roof (Lisa a réparé elle-même le toit)

Lisa had the roof repaired (Le toit de Lisa a été réparé par
quelqu’un, probablement un spécialiste)

Lisa needs to get her roof repaired ( Lisa doit trouver quelqu’un
pour réparer le toit de sa maison)

Lisa got her roof repaired (Lisa a trouvé quelqu’un qui a réparé le
toit de sa maison)

PRESENT SIMPLE Peter eats an apple An apple is eaten by Peter

Peter doesn’t eat an apple An apple isn’t eaten by Peter

PRESENT CONTINUOUS Peter is eating an apple An apple is being eaten by Peter

Peter isn’t eating an apple An apple isn’t being eaten by Peter
PAST SIMPLE Peter ate an apple An apple was eaten by Peter
Peter didn’t eat an apple An apple wasn’t eaten by Peter

PAST CONTINUOUS Peter was eating an apple An apple was being eaten by Peter
Peter wasn’t eating an apple An apple wasn’t being eaten by Peter

PRESENT PERFECT Peter has eaten an apple An apple has been eaten by Peter
Peter hasn’t eaten an apple An apple hasn’t been eaten by Peter

PAST PERFECT Peter had eaten an apple An apple had been eaten by Peter
Peter hadn’t eaten an apple An apple hadn’t been eaten by Peter

FUTURE Peter will eat an apple An apple will be eaten by Peter

Peter won’t eat an apple An apple won’t be eaten by Peter
