C’était le 5 avril 1971. Dans Le Nouvel Observateur, 343 femmes signaient un manifeste et
déclaraient avoir eu recours à l’avortement malgré l’interdiction pénale, et réclamaient le droit à
disposer de leur corps. Un geste médiatique, comme un coup de tonnerre dans l'opinion publique.
« Un appel de 343 femmes. Un million de femmes se font avorter chaque année en France. Elles
le font dans des conditions dangereuses en raison de la clandestinité à laquelle elles sont
condamnées alors que cette opération, pratiquée sous contrôle médical, est des plus simples. On
fait le silence sur ces millions de femmes. Je déclare que je suis l’une d’elles. Je déclare avoir
avorté. De même que nous réclamons le libre accès aux moyens anticonceptionnels, nous
réclamons l’avortement libre. » Le Manifeste des 343
L'enjeu ? Dénoncer l'hypocrisie ambiante. Si l'avortement est à cette époque illégal en France,
bon nombre de femmes se rendent à l’étranger pour avorter, en Angleterre, en Suisse et aux
Pays-Bas notamment. Et nombreuses sont celles qui, faute de moyens, ont recours à des
faiseuses d'ange dans la clandestinité.
