THE IMPERFECT

This tense is used in FRENCH when:

 Something USED to happen

 Something WAS happenING
 Talking about the WEATHER in the past
 Giving an OPINION about something/someone in the past
 You’re giving a DESCRIPTION of something/someone in the past

It is formed from the NOUS form of the verb in the PRESENT (but for the vast majority of verbs, it simply
means removing the infinitive ending), by removing the ONS ending and adding the following imperfect
tense endings:
je AIS* nous IONS *all these verb endings sound the same
tu AIS* vous IEZ (as if they were spelt & pronounced as: È)
il/elle/on AIS* ils/elles
AIENT*
Examples: aller  nous allons (present tense)  all + ending = j’allAIS vous allIEZ elle allAIT
manger  nous mangeons  mange + ending = tu mangeAIS ils mangeAIENT
faire  nous faisons  fais + ending = tu faisAIS ells faisAIENT Have you noticed?

! The verb être is regular, except for the fact it changes its accent like this: ét... venir revenir devenir
