En avril 1815, Wellington prend le commandement des forces alliées aux Pays-Bas et il réorganise l'armée. Les
troupes britanniques et allemandes (Hanovriens) ont été fusionnées avec les troupes hollandaises-belges. En avril-
juin, l'armée de Wellington est renforcée par des troupes de Brunswick et de Nassau. A Waterloo, l'armée alliée
était composée de 53 850 fantassins, 13 350 cavaliers, 5 000 artilleurs et 1 000 sapeurs, mineurs, etc.
Wellington s'inquiétait d'une éventuelle attaque française sur la route Mons-Hal-Bruxelles malgré l'absence de
rapports faisant état d'un tel mouvement. Il a posté à Hal 17 000 hommes pour freiner une telle avance. Si
Wellington avait perdu à Waterloo, il aurait beaucoup de mal à justifier tant d'hommes oisifs à 2-3 heures de
marche.
La qualité des troupes sous Wellington à Waterloo variait. Environ. 75 % des bataillons britanniques et KGL ont
servi dans la péninsule (III/1st Foot Guard, I et II Light KGL, I, II, III, IV, V, VI KGL, I/52nd Foot, I/71st Foot, I,II,
III/95th Rifles, I/23rd Foot, I/51st Foot, I/28th Foot, I/32nd Foot, I/79th Foot, III/1st Foot, II/44th Foot, I/42nd
Black Watch, I/92nd Foot , I/4e pied, I/27e pied, I/40e pied)ainsi les affirmations (y compris celles de Lancey)
selon lesquelles les troupes de Wellington de la péninsule servaient en Amérique ou étaient renvoyées sont de la
fiction. Une partie de la cavalerie était superbe, par exemple la brigade du baron von Ghigny : 4e régiment de
dragons légers (néerlandais) et 8e régiment de hussards (belge). Une partie de la cavalerie était pauvre, par
exemple le Duke of Cumberland Hussar Regiment sous le lieutenant-col. Hake s'enfuit du champ de bataille,
tandis que le 7th Hussar Regiment britannique perdait ses nerfs et refusait de charger.
La taille des troupes variait. Les historiens anglais soulignent toujours à quel point les bataillons britanniques
étaient en sous-effectif. C'est correct. Mais ce n'est pas tout. Bien qu'en sous-effectif, le bataillon britannique était
une formation beaucoup plus forte. que le bataillon prussien ou français.
Bataillon moyen à Waterloo :
- 640 hommes / Infanterie de Wellington ( Britannique - 665 hommes , KGL - 520 hommes, Hanovrien - ?)
- 610 hommes / Infanterie de Blucher
- seulement 520 hommes / Infanterie de Napoléon
Le bataillon le plus important sur le champ de bataille était le I/52nd Regiment of Foot britannique, 1.130 hommes
!
Le plus petit bataillon était le III / 108e régiment de ligne français , 251 hommes. Les bataillons de la British Foot
Guard représentaient en moyenne environ. 1 000 hommes, l'effectif du régiment français.
Les escadrons les plus puissants sur le champ de bataille étaient également les escadrons de Wellington.
