Abstract
Inventory of the different date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) cultivars in the regions of
Oued-Righ and Oued-Souf (Algeria)
This study is focused on the systematic inventory of the date palm cultivars found in the
regions of Oued-Righ and Oued-Souf. Oued-Righ has 175 cultivars and Oued-Souf
56. The scope of the genetic diversity varies according to the types of plantations.
Thus, traditional plantations present all of the cultivars inventoried. Conversely,
modern plantations contain the following six cultivars: Deglet-Nour, Degla-Beida,
Mech-Degla, Ghars, Tinicine, and Tantboucht. Finally, recently established planta-
tions still maintain a varietal diversity even though it is less important. Generally
speaking, nine cultivars were counted, namely Deglet-Nour, Degla-Beida, Mech-
Degla, Ghars, Tinicine, Tantboucht, Tafzwin, Tanslit, and Hamraya. Nevertheless,
only seven out of all the cultivars listed have a real economic importance, namely
