Les concepts d’environnement, puis de développement durable,

font l’objet d’une prise de conscience croissante depuis
plusieurs décennies. L’évolution de notre environnement
naturel dans ses multiples dimensions (air, eau, sol, biodiversité,
etc.) nous invite à réfléchir sur son avenir (c’est-à-dire à ce que
l’on transmettra aux générations futures, idée au cœur du
concept de développement durable). Ce questionnement
renvoie notamment à l’impact des activités humaines
(notamment économiques) sur l’environnement naturel ainsi qu’aux actions correctives et
préventives à imaginer et à mettre en œuvre. En outre, ces thèmes renvoient à des analyses
et enjeux aussi bien managériaux qu’économiques, politiques ou sociétaux. L’environnement
et le développement durable constituent enfin des domaines complexes nécessitant la
mobilisation d’approches pluridisciplinaires et transversales.

The concepts of environment, then of sustainable development,

have been the subject of growing awareness for several decades.
The evolution of our natural environment in its many dimensions
(air, water, land, biodiversity, etc.) invites us to reflect on its future
(that is to say on what we will pass on to future generations, an idea
at the heart of the concept of sustainable development). This issue
refers in particular to the impact of human activities (especially economic) on the natural
environment as well as corrective and preventive actions to imagine and implement. Finally,
environment and sustainable development are complex areas requiring a multidisciplinary and
transversal approach.

Qui je suis / Who I am

Je m’appelle Marie-Claire LOISON. Je suis professeure-chercheuse
à emlyon business school. Je suis agrégée d’économie-gestion,
ancienne élève de l’ENS Cachan et docteure en sciences de gestion
(Université Paris Dauphine). Je vous propose cette année de
travailler ensemble sur le thème de l’environnement et du
développement durable. Ce thème occupe une place centrale dans
mes activités recherches. En effet, mes recherches portent
principalement sur les pratiques de responsabilité sociétale de l’entreprise (RSE) et de développement
durable, à la fois dans une perspective historique et contemporaine. Ma démarche de recherche est
principalement qualitative. Je m’intéresse notamment à des secteurs d’activité (industriels) où les
enjeux environnementaux sont présents depuis bien longtemps, comme la chimie ou l’aluminium.
Actuellement je travaille par exemple sur le cas du déversement en mer Méditerranée (Parc National
des Calanques) des boues rouges (résidus de bauxite) par une usine de production d’alumine (matière
première dans la fabrication d’aluminium) située à Gardanne en Provence. Ce cas fait l’objet d’un
conflit environnemental impliquant industriels, pouvoirs publics et communautés locales depuis
plusieurs décennies.

My name is Marie-Claire Loison. I am professor and researcher at

emlyon business school. Before joining the school, I obtained a PhD
degree in Management from the Paris Dauphine University after
studying at ENS Cachan. This year the RECAPSS topic I propose is
about environmental issues and sustainable development. These
topics represent a major part of my research activities. Indeed my
main research focuses on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and
sustainable development practices. More precisely, I study the
historical background to CSR practices and their contemporary aspects through an in-depth qualitative
analysis of past and present corporate practices in the field. I mainly investigate activities and industries
facing early on environmental issues (e.g. aluminium, chemical). For example, I am currently working
on the case of the disposal of red muds (bauxite residue) to the Mediterranean Sea (Calanques National
Park). These red muds are produced by an alumina (raw material used to produce aluminium) plant
located in Gardanne (Provence, France). This situation has been generating an environmental conflict
involving industrialists, public authorities and local communities for several decades.

NB. For international students: you can choose this RECAPSS topic if you wish to practice and improve
your French. You do not need to have written proficiency of French, but a good oral and reading
understanding of it is important. The language of class discussions will be primarily French. Readings
will sometimes be in one of the two languages according to the source (no translations will be
available), often they will be in English since most research today is published in English.
