All packages should be closely examined at time of delivery. If damage is apparent write “Damage In
Shipment” on ALL copies of the freight or express bill BEFORE delivery is accepted or “signed for” by
a GE representative or hospital receiving agent. Whether noted or concealed, damage MUST be
reported to the carrier immediately upon discovery, or in any event, within 14 days after receipt, and the
contents and containers held for inspection by the carrier. A transportation company will not pay a claim

Voluson BT14 to BT15 Upgrade kit Instruction

Section 1-1. Overview

1-1-1 Precondition
None.

1-1-2 Purpose of the BT14 to BT15 Upgrade Manual

These instructions are part of a kit that provides necessary software components to upgrade VolusonTM
S6, VolusonTM S8 BT14 ultrasound systems to the most recent revision of a VolusonTM S6, VolusonTM
S8 BT15 (= software version 14.0.0 WESO and higher).

NOTICE If unfamiliar with the system on site, please use the system’s manuals for reference, since not every
detail can be covered here.

1-1-2-1 Compatibility BT14 to BT15

NOTE: All probes of BT14 can be used with BT15.

• All software options already purchased are transferred to without additional costs.
• Image and patient data remain untouched and can be reused with the new software.
• Images and patient data are still available after the upgrade
NOTE: Additional items like, probes, peripherals as well as hard- and software options need to be
ordered separately according to the current price list of VolusonTM S-Series (BT14).

NOTE: This action will delete all user settings and system settings. so please make sure that all
necessary information are written down.

1-1-2-2 General Outline of Upgrade Procedure

• Check upgrade kit components and serial numbers and fill out the Upgrade Record.
• Perform an image archive backup to DVD or external USB device.
• Change Boot Priority, insert System DVD and boot into LINUX.
• Perform complete new harddisk setup ("NewDisk" function).
• Reload Archive Backup.
• Check Image Settings to match with BT15 software (SW 14.x.x) and probes.
• Re-installation of printers and other external devices has to be done after the upgrade procedure.
• Perform Functional Checks after the upgrade.

Section 1-2. Before the Upgrade

1-2-1 Overview
Before starting the upgrade, ask the customer if there are any issues with the unit and perform an initial
verification of the system. When it is verified to be OK, proceed with the upgrade. If there are problems
with the system, make sure to check whether these issues will be fixed by the new software version. Fix
any hardware issues before the upgrade.

1-2-2 Functional Checks before the Upgrade

NOTE: Please make sure that all system functions are working correct, before performing the Upgrade.

utility. This is to be done in the System Setup desktop pages.

Select destination, enter the description and then click on NEXT.

1-2-3-2 System Setup settings
1.) Press the UTILITIES key on the control panel.
2.) In the "Utilities" menu touch the SYSTEM SETUP button to invoke the setup desktop on the screen.
3.) On the left side of the screen select ADMINISTRATION and then click the SYSTEM INFO tab, to
see which Application Software is installed in the unit.

4.) Select the OPTIONS tab to see which options are currently installed in the system.

NOTE: It is not necessary to note the Permanent Key; it is the state of the option that matters.

NOTICE Even if they are restored after upgrade procedure, it is strongly recommend to record settings of all
other System setup pages; see: step 6.) to step 7.).

6.) On the left side of the screen select GENERAL:

• Click the GENERAL tab and print out or write down the settings of this page.
• Click the USER SETTINGS tab and print out or write down the settings of this page.
• Click the PATIENT INFO DISPLAY tab and print out or write down the settings of this page.
7.) On the left side of the screen select CONNECTIVITY:
• Click the PERIPHERALS tab and print out or write down the settings of this page.
• Click the BUTTON CONFIGURATION tab and print out or write down the settings of the [Overview]
and [Detailed Setup] tab.
• Click the DEVICE SETUP tab and then click on
- the [DICOM Configuration] button and print out the "DICOM Configuration" dialog page or
write down the DICOM parameters (AE Title, Station Name, Retry Count and Retry Interval).
- the [Network Configuration] button and print out the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties"
dialog page or write down the IP settings.
8.) Disconnect all external USB devices (e.g., USB printer).

CAUTION It is essential for a successful upgrade procedure that external USB devices get powered off and
disconnected before proceeding with the upgrade.
Re-installation of any previously attached printer has to be done after the upgrade procedure.

Voluson BT14 to BT15 Upgrade kit Software
Upgrade Procedure

Section 2-1. Overview

In this chapter the new BT15 software is applied to the system by using the "System DVD".

Section 2-2. Change BIOS Boot Priority

The "BIOS Setup Utility" screen is still displayed.

1.) Using the "Arrow" keys [←left] or [→right] on the alphanumeric keyboard select the [Boot] tab.

2.) Using the keys PG UP [↑ up] and PG DN [↓ down] on the alphanumeric keyboard select Boot
Priority Selection and then press ENTER.

3.) Change Device Boot priority from Type Based to Device Based.

4.) Insert the System DVD into the DVD drive.

5.) Press the F10 key to Save and Exit.
6.) Confirm the "Save configuration changes and exit now?" message with OK and ENTER.
The system restarts automatically and boots into LINUX. The "Voluson Maintenance System" main
menu (see: Figure 2-3) appears on the screen.

Section 2-3. System Software - Installation Procedure

1.) By means of the PG UP [↑ up] and PG DN [↓ down] key select [Media], then confirm with ENTER.

NOTE: If the message: "Recovery system (Linux) needs to be updated ..." appears, confirm with YES.

2.) Select [NewDisk] and confirm with ENTER.

3.) In the displayed menus select [Exit]→[Exit/Reboot].

4.) Remove the System DVD from the DVD/CD+(R)W Drive drive.

Section 2-4. Re-adjust BIOS Boot Priority

NOTE: The BIOS "Boot Device Priority" order has to be changed back to 1st = HDD, 2nd = DVD!

1.) During startup, press the DEL key immediately, to enter BIOS again.
2.) Using the "Arrow" keys [←left] or [→right] on the alphanumeric keyboard select the [Boot] tab.
3.) Using the keys PG UP [↑ up] and PG DN [↓ down] on the alphanumeric keyboard select Boot
Priority Selection and then press ENTER.
4.) Change Device Boot priority from Device Based to Type Based.
5.) Press the F10 key to Save and Exit.
6.) Confirm the "Save configuration changes and exit now?" message with YES and ENTER.
The system reboots automatically.

Section 2-5. Activating System Software

NOTICE An automated process was developed to install the required software parts, perform check disk, remap
drive letters and match settings. During this process the system will reboot several times!

1.) Please wait until all processes are finished and the final "DOS" window appear.

2.) Press the A key to activate the Ultrasound Application Software [UIS].
The Ultrasound Application continues to start. Finally the 2D screen is displayed on the monitor.

Chapter 3
Voluson BT14 to BT15 Upgrade kit Setup and
Checkout

Section 3-1. Overview

In this chapter, the system will be reconfigured such that it is operational again using all peripherals.

WARNING Functional Checks have to be performed after the upgrade.

Section 3-2. Reload Archive Backup

1.) Connect a probe and start any user program.
2.) Press the UTILITIES key on the control panel once to display the Utilities menu.
3.) Select the SYSTEM SETUP button from the Utilities menu.
4.) On the left side of the screen select BACKUP and then click the Image Archive tab.
5.) Click the LOAD button.

Section 3-3. Verify System Setup pages

1.) Press the UTILITIES key on the control panel once to display the Utilities menu.
2.) Select the SYSTEM SETUP button from the Utilities menu.
3.) Select ADMINISTRATION - which is displayed on the left side of the screen.
4.) Check and match settings of all system setup pages.
5.) Click the SAVE&EXIT button to store settings and exit the System Setup desktop screen.

Section 3-4. Printer Setup

Reconnect the external devices, install all the printers and adjust the printer settings. For details see:
Service Manual.

3-4-1 Remote Control Selection

1.) Press the UTILITIES key on the control panel once to display the Utilities menu.
2.) Select the SYSTEM SETUP button from the Utilities menu.
3.) Select CONNECTIVITY - which is displayed on the left side of the screen.
4.) Check and match system settings in the BUTTON CONFIGURATION page’s [Overview] and
[Detailed Setup] tab.

5.) Click the SAVE&EXIT button to store settings and exit the System Setup desktop screen.

Section 3-5. Check System Info page

Following steps verify that the "User settings" have been loaded correctly.

1.) Press the UTILITIES key on the control panel.

2.) In the "Utilities" menu touch SYSTEM SETUP to invoke the setup desktop on the screen.
3.) On the left side of the screen select ADMINISTRATION and then click the SYSTEM INFO tab.

4.) Check that Software "Major" version number is 14.0.0 and "Level"# is WESO and higher.
5.) Check that Tune-version of the Application presets match the System Software version.
6.) Disconnect all probes and then click the button at the bottom of the SYSTEM INFO page to start

Section 3-6. Functional Checks after Upgrade

1.) Perform Software and Functional checks as described in Table 1-3 on page 1-3.
2.) Check Service Connectivity; if required, perform InSite Checkout.

Section 3-7. Complete the Upgrade

After completing functional checks:

1.) Leave the Service Manual and System DVD of this Upgrade kit with the customer. Store the
System DVD under the systems back top cover.
2.) Return the system to the customer and ensure acceptance.

NOTICE Before leaving the customer site have the staff operate the system. Ensure that:
• all settings are customized.
• all peripherals are functioning.
• all communications are working properly (e.g. DICOM and external reporting; if
applicable)

3.) Properly dispose of excess material. Never leave old software and documents at the customer site.

Section 4-2 Installation procedure

1.) Affix the UDI Label for BT14 to 15 SW UPKIT_VS6/S8 on a cleaned surface at the left rear side of
the Voluson system. Refer to below figure.
