Le prtrit modal a la forme habituelle d'un prtrit (sauf pour to be , on emploie were
toutes les personnes) mais il ne fait pas rfrence au pass chronologique, comme le prtrit
normal . Il exprime l'irrel du prsent: une situation que l'on imagine ou que l'on souhaite, mais
qui n'est pas ralise au moment o l'on parle. Le past perfect (ou pluperfect) est utilis pour
exprimer lirrel du pass. En franais, ce sont le conditionnel et le subjonctif qui jouent ce rle.
1. If you had been more generous with your children then, they would be far better off now.
2. It's time you went to bed, children.
3. I wish they had known what to answer.
4. We would never be ready in time, unless some miracle happened.
5. If the Stock Market were to collapse, I would be utterly ruined.
6. He'd rather you stayed away from his daughter.
