D'après Rohde, ce n'est pas la religionpopulaire, non plus que
les légendes homériques,ce sont les croyancesmystiquesde cer-
taines sectes religieusesqui ont donné naissance à l'idée de l'âme
rationnelle.Le culte de Bacchus en aurait contenu le germe.
« Le culte de cette divinité thrace (Sabos, Sabazios), dit
Rohde, qui sur tous les pointss'éloignait de ce que nous connais-
sons par Homèredu culte des Grecs,et s'apparentait,au contraire,
de trèsprès à celui que les Phrygiens,peuple presque identique
aux Thraces, rendaientà leur mère Cybèle, offraitun caractère
pleinementorgiastique. La fête se célébrait sur les hauteurs,
dans la nuit sombre, à la lumière incertaine des torches. Une
musique bruyanteretentissait,les sons éclatants des cymbales
d'airain, le sourd grondementdes tympanonset les accents pro-
fondsdes flûtes...Excitée par cette musique sauvage, la troupe
des fidèlesdanse en poussant des cris perçants. Pas de chants :
la danse, tropviolente,ne laisse plus de souffle...Le plus souvent,
c'étaient des femmes qui dansaient ainsi jusqu'au vertige et à
l'épuisement,étrangementdéguisées1. Elles portaientde longs
vêtementsflottantsfaitsde peaux de renards,ou une fourrurede
chevreuil,et des cornes sur leur tête. Echevelées, elles tenaientà
la maiû des serpentsconsacrés à Sabazios ; elles brandissaientdes
poignards ou des thyrsesqui cachaient sous le lierre la pointe
de leurs lames. Ainsi elles s'agitaient jusqu'à l'extrême épuise-
ment,et, en proie au saint délire,elles se ruaientsur les animaux
choisis pourle sacrifice,saisissaient et déchiraientleur proie, en
arrachaientavec leurs dents des lambeaux de chair sanglante
qu'elles avalaient crue 2. »
