GRAND BURGUNDY OFFER 2009 EN PRIMEUR

fter the frenzy of the Bordeaux 2009 campaign last

spring, the world has been waiting for the launch of the
Burgundian wines from the same glorious summer. The
good news is that the wines are fabulous and very few
producers have caught Bordeaux pricing fever. The bad
news is that each individual wine is in short supply, given the
fragmented nature of Burgundian vineyard holdings, so please bear
with us if we cannot supply all your needs. More wines are being
offered in cases of six bottles this year to help spread the offering.
We have revived an earlier tradition by including the top wines from
Chablis this year. New to the brochure are the delicious PulignyMontrachets from Etienne Sauzet and a trio from Ghislaine
Barthods partner Louis Boillot, and we are also offering some
canny purchases from the 2009 Hospices de Beaune auction. As
ever, there are many wines which could not be included here for
reasons of space, so do consult www.bbr.com for the full selection
which includes some juicy web exclusives.
Throughout this offer we suggest drinking dates for each wine.
Please note that these are only a guide as you will each have your
own preferences for the ideal moment to appreciate a wine,
whether in relative youth or maturity.

2009 VINTAGE REPORT

The summer of 2009 had a very different feel compared to its two
immediate predecessors. It was not without problems, notably hail
in May and some poor weather in July, but thereafter conditions
were as favourable as possible.
The flowering took place in warm sunny conditions, though
sometimes very windy, in late May and into the very start of June,
setting a likely harvest date of 10th September. Fine weather in June
with occasional heat spikes turned much more variable in July with

some heavy storms, most notably on 13th and 14th July when over
100mm of rain fell. This made life difficult for the vignerons as they
could not get into the vineyards, but fortunately caused no real damage.
The weather continued unsettled, with alternating hot and cool days,
and further storms on 22nd and 23rd July. There were occasional
signs of mildew but these were very localised. Otherwise the vines
were looking good and the grapes healthy, with vraison around the
end of the month, when the weather was improving.
August was glorious, developing into a small heatwave towards the
middle of the month before the weather broke with a welcome storm
(thunder and rain rather than anything worse) on the morning of
Friday 21st. Apart from a brief incursion from the tail end of Hurricane
Bill (25th and 26th), the weather stayed fine for the rest of the month
and growers could hardly contain their optimism.
The change of the moon suggested more unsettled weather but apart
from a drab first week of September, it looked as if the fine weather had
returned for the duration of the harvest. Picking started in the Mconnais
from around 2nd September, in the Cte de Beaune from the 5th and a
few days later in the Cte de Nuits. It continued in Chablis and the
Auxerrois through the middle of the month, in glorious sunshine
For both colours, the grapes were picked at good sugar levels but
without fear of unsuitably high degrees; the typical profile falls
between 13 and 13.5%, not reaching 14% or above, and the grapes
were fully physiologically ripe.
The key to success in 2009 has been to retain a fresh quality to wines
which are naturally rich. One technique for the reds which has been
widely used is to incorporate a percentage of the stems during
vinification. Some domaines have always done this, the majority have
tended not to. However there is a movement now towards some whole
bunch vinification with stems, and it was widely used in 2009.

RED WINES
One is tempted to want to play down the hype surrounding the 2009
vintage but it is hard to do so. While this is not 2005, a vintage of
unparalleled density and a firm tannic structure for exceptionally long
ageing, 2009 ranks among the very best vintages of recent times. At
harvest, the feeling was similar in quality and style to 1999, another
year where a large crop was able to ripen fully during a fine warm
summer. Tasting the wines, there is more of a parallel with 1990 but
maybe we should look as far back as 1959 for the best comparison, a
beautifully ripe vintage that delivered stellar quality for both red and
white wines. Time and again I find myself using the word graceful in
my tasting notes.

WHITE WINES
Contrary to initial expectations, many of the white wines in 2009 are
absolutely stunning. They began to show their true qualities only after
the summer, when a mineral backbone appeared in support of the
graceful, ripe fruit. I was reminded of 1992, completely delicious
wines designed for the medium rather than the long term. There may
not be enough acidity in 2009 to make really old bones, but they will
be absolutely compelling in their first ten years, with the most exciting
subtleties of flavours, magnificently multi-layered, such as we have
not seen in recent times.

KEY POINTS

This is a vintage both bountiful and beautiful, of good volume

and great quality

The red wines are rich, ripe and rounded

The whites are generous, and fresher than expected
The prices are rather more reasonable than for top Bordeaux!

CHABLIS

Benot Droin

Didier Sguier

Domaine Benot Droin

Domaine William Fvre

When Benot Droin took over from his father Jean-Paul, he set about refining production in two key areas:
yields were reduced to allow for greater concentration in the raw material and the oak regime was
reworked so that each vineyard could be treated differently according to its needs. This makes tasting the
full range of Benots wines, in his modern installation just below the slopes of the Grand Crus, a
fascinating experience.

Theres no question that Fvre, in its current incarnation, is at the very top of the Chablis tree. Didier
Sguier has been in charge since Henriot bought the Domaine in 1998 and they now own 12 hectares of
Premier Cru vineyards and no less than 16 hectares of Grand Crus. Everything is harvested by hand and
the Premier Crus are vinified in 40-50% oak, the Grand Crus receiving 70-80% without using new wood.

Chablis, Monte de Tonnerre, 1er Cru

This wine has an undoubtedly classy nose with real
depth of flavour. Smooth, harmonious and very much
in balance, this is a multi-layered and soothing wine
which will be best enjoyed in two to four years time.
Drink 2012-2016.
79163B 12 x 75CL PER CASE
186.00

Chablis, Grenouilles, Grand Cru

With a brilliant warm spicy bouquet typical of this
Grand Cru, this 2009 is a rich, opulent Chablis with a
buttery texture preceding a beautiful, classic minerality
on the finish. Drink 2013-2016.
79167B 12 x 75CL PER CASE
354.00

Chablis, Monte de Tonnerre, 1er Cru

A powerfully constructed wine that is still a little
backward at this point but with real weight and great
potential for the future, thanks to the fine, balancing
acidity. Drink 2012-2016.
79169B 12 x 75CL PER CASE
270.00

Chablis, Les Clos, Grand Cru

The warmth and the weight of the year are evident in
this wine with excellent acidity and a powerful mineral
core creating a perfect balance. It is reminiscent of flinty
minerals and baked rich Madeira cake, and will be
monumental when it is ready. Drink 2014-2020.
79166B 12 x 75CL PER CASE
354.00

Chablis, Vaulorent, 1er Cru

This vineyard is the best subsection of Fourchaume
and the wine is a beautiful pale colour with an almost
enveloping rich white fruit behind, and peaches and
pears in evidence. It is intoxicating at the front end, yet
it remains precise; a magical bottle which will give
great pleasure early in life. Drink 2011-2015.
79170B 12 x 75CL PER CASE
348.00

Chablis, Vaudsir, Grand Cru

One of the best wines in the cellar, this has depth and
weight, with a warmth that binds them beautifully
together and oak that does not show at all through the
fruit. Drink 2013-2016.
79165B 12 x 75CL PER CASE
297.00

Chablis, Les Preuses, Grand Cru

There is power, weight and typical 2009 richness to
this wine, yet it manages to evade real heaviness. It
starts discreetly, then bursts forward on the palate to
present a very broad front. This will certainly stand up
to rich sauces and will clearly develop well from here.
Drink 2012-2016.
79171B 12 x 75CL PER CASE
480.00
Chablis, Bougros, Cte Bougerots, Grand Cru
There is a huge volume of fruit here, though mostly in
reserve, with perfect freshness to back it all up. The
hard work ploughing by hand in the vineyard has paid
off in the pure, piercing finish, making an exceptionally
fine wine. Drink 2013-2018.
79172B 12 x 75CL PER CASE
480.00
Chablis, Les Clos, Grand Cru
A glorious bright colour, with a perfect nose, this is an
exact representation of the vineyard. It is brilliantly
chiselled with added 2009 succulence and,
throughout the palate, this wine is infused with ripe
white fruits, rising to the majesty you would expect from
the greatest of the Grand Crus. Drink 2013-2020.

Domaine Jean-Claude Bessin

Twenty-five years ago the eminent Louis Pinson

presided over this domaine and today you are
likely to be greeted by his great-grand-daughter
Charlne. Time moves on and the wines are once
again amongst the finest of the region. They have
an excellent range of Premier Cru wines topped by
the Grand Cru Les Clos, with an intelligent blend of
barrel and tank for the vinification and maturation.

Body language can be misleading. Jean-Claude

Bessin does not have a marketing bone in his
body, unless his doleful air is deliberate counterpropaganda. In any case, the wines speak for
themselves. He is among the rare few in Chablis
who prefer to pick their grapes by hand, while
vinification takes place in a mix of tank and
barrel. Here we select two favourites out of his
range of wines.

Chablis, Vaillons, 1er Cru

With a lovely nose of white flowers and fruit building to
a fine culmination, this is a classical Vaillons, showing
very well indeed, with an incisive structure that
perfectly balances the fat of the year.

MCONNAIS

Jean-Philippe Bret

Bret Brothers

Les Hritiers du Comte Lafon

Bret Brothers Domaine de la Soufrandire has been one of the most impressive producers in the
Mconnais over the past ten years and this year the two founder brothers, Jean-Philippe and JeanGuillaume, have been joined by a third sibling, Marc-Antoine. Work is about to begin to extend the
winery, not with a view to expanding the range in any significant way, but because more space is
needed to manage current production. The wines are certified organic and biodynamic and have the
attraction of being immediately appealing to drink.

The Lafon Mcon estate has really grown into its

own during the last ten years and Dominique Lafon
needs to do little more than offer guidance to his
talented local team. 2009 looks to be the finest
vintage to date and the wines continue to be
farmed biodynamically and have organic
certification. New to the label this year is the
beautifully succulent Vir-Cless, which is
produced from several hectares of vineyards leased
from Chteau de Vir.

WHITE
Mcon-Villages
This cuve is largely made from declassified barrels
acquired from grander appellations including PouillyFuiss. Best enjoyed young, it shows a lovely contrast
between soft-centred fruit and a crunchy structure.

Pouilly-Fuiss, En Carementrant
Beautifully perfumed with refreshingly youthful fruit,

Dominique Lafon

Pouilly-Vinzelles, Les Quarts

One of Burgundys most iconic white wines, this 2009
vintage of Domaine de la Soufrandires flagship
Pouilly-Vinzelles has a pure, fine and well-chiselled
bouquet. The palate is multi-layered, poised and
classic with just a trace of tannin helping to define the
structure. This is a very impressive wine.

Pouilly-Vinzelles, Cuve Millerande (en magnum)
A few rows of vines at this vineyard always offer
bunches of tiny millerand berries, which give a
seriously high concentration of skin to juice and a
terrific dry, richness of fruit. Vinified and bottled
separately, in magnum, this has additional succulence
without losing its mineral backbone and will age
extremely well. Drink 2012-2018.

WHITE
Mcon-Chardonnay, Clos de la Crochette

Mcon-Milly-Lamartine, Clos du Four

impressive volume of fruit waiting in reserve.

Vir-Cless
Vir-Cless is known to produce really succulent
wines, and this is no exception, but Dominique made

Olivier Merlin

Olivier Merlin
The Merlins brand new cuvrie was up and running for the start of the 2009 harvest and this made it
much easier to manage than in previous years. Next year their fabulous-looking new vineyard that is
planted on the steep south-facing slope above the village will also come on stream, and everything looks
set fair for a fine future for Olivier and Corinne which they have richly deserved, having created their
business from a standing start.

Olivier Lamy

Domaine Hubert Lamy

Jean-Yves Devevey

Olivier Lamy is one of the few producers who actually made less wine in 2009 than 2008, which is
bad news for us as these are superlative wines. He started picking earlier than most, as he judged
everything to be ripe, so there are no high degrees of alcohol here and the wines are deliciously fresh.
This domaine remains the standout address in St Aubin.

There was a terrific moment for Jean-Yves in March 2010 when he signed an agreement to farm two
hectares of Rully. Unfortunately, it had not yet been pruned and time was running out but 20 of his vigneron
friends, including several in this catalogue, rallied round and together they completed the job in a single day.
This vineyard will come on stream next year while the Rully Premier Cru and Chassagne Premier Cru,
missing in 2008, are back for 2009.

Caroline lEstim (ne Gagnard) has been converting the domaine to organic farming, further fine-tuning

Domaine Michel Bouzereau & Fils

Veteran Gerard Boudot was supremely relaxed in his cellar when we went to taste the 2009s a
fabulous vintage from a domaine that has been on top form in recent years, while the next generation
(daughter Emilie and son-in-law Benot) are steadily taking on responsibilities. Picking started early on
7th September, while the long slow fermentation has helped to build subtle layers of flavour into the
wines this year. This is a really excellent result. Prices will be available in January.

2009 is the first vintage made from start to finish at Jean-Baptistes sparkling new premises and one can
already see a beneficial dividend in the quality and purity of fruit. Jean-Baptiste began harvesting on 7th
September and is really happy with the resulting volumes which are substantially up on previous years.
The 2009 wines are really fine and, with absolutely healthy fruit, no problems were experienced with
either the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations.

Domaine Arnaud Ente

Patrick Javillier began picking on 6th September, having advanced his start date on seeing how quickly the
grapes were ripening. None of the wines exceed 13% alcohol and he has retained good acidity
throughout. This is yet another wonderful range from Patrick, who maintains his knack of building superb
texture into his wines thanks to his management of the lees.

Arnaud and Marie-Odile began picking on 1st September 2009 which, as usual, was well before their
neighbours; when you run your vineyards as meticulously as they do, you tend to get ripe grapes that bit
earlier. The wines are aged for the first year in barrel, mostly the larger demi-muid format for the first three
wines below, then given a further six months in tank. These are some of the greatest white wines in
Burgundy, and priced accordingly.

Operations have now moved down to a custombuilt winery on the outskirts of Chagny, the loss of

upgrade in working conditions. Happily the
distinguished features of courteous veteran
Michel Niellon are still to be found, alongside his

Jean-Philippe is one of the most meticulous producers we know, with never a barrel out of line, nor a
spanner out of place in his workshop. His wines are for those who like purity and he believes that 2009
has everything required to be an exceptional vintage. There was a good size crop that ripened without
excessive sugar levels appearing at the end and no problems in the cellar either, where the wines are now
matured for 12 months in barrel before they spend a further six months in tank.

As usual this has exceptional quality for village level St

Aubin. The fruit is crisp and elegant and the finish has an
enticing mineral edge to it.

Few growers can surpass Jean-Yves Deveveys ability to craft

wines which are brilliant expressions of their terroir. This
Chassagne has delicious minerality, fresh citrus elements on
the bouquet and a nutty, peachy complexity.

CTE DE BEAUNE

Etienne de Montille

Antoine Jobard

Domaine de Montille

Domaine Antoine Jobard

Etienne de Montille has been increasingly interested in vinifying his red wines with the use of stems and
ripe fruit recently, and in 2009 he was able to take this technique further, with between two-thirds and
100% stems being included in most wines. This influences both the aromatic profile and the structure of
the wines, adding complexity and staying power at the expense of pure red fruit. The De Montille 2009s
are built to last and, as usual, are an excellent range.

Antoine is now firmly in the driving seat at this fabulous domaine, in succession to his father Franois
who has finally retired after delivering glorious, long-lived Meursaults throughout his 50-year career.
Fully ripe, without exceeding 13.5% alcohol, Antoine has made some glorious 2009s and we are
delighted to have significantly increased our allocation this year. Since 2007 the domaine has been
farmed organically, though without certificate.

Michel Lafarge

Benjamin Leroux

Domaine Michel Lafarge

Domaine du Comte Armand

There are domaines which attract you for the quality of the wines they produce, and those where the people
involved are quite exceptional in their own right. Domaine Michel Lafarge ticks both those boxes, not least
because of the extraordinary persona of the ever present Michel Lafarge, allied to the expertise of son
Frdric. It is always a pleasure to visit top-class domaines and sometimes it is humbling. Make sure you
fight for an allocation of these brilliant 2009s.

Benjamin Leroux is surely the eminence blonde of the Cte de Beaune, the go-to person for other vignerons
in need of advice. His period in charge at the Domaine du Comte Armand (since 1999) has resulted in a
series of brilliant wines, with perhaps the 2009 representing the pinnacle of his career to date.

Benjamin Leroux

2009 offered the perfect conjunction of a first-rate

vintage with acceptable pricing, thanks to the
depressed economic situation. And since prices
rose again for the 2010 auction, it looks as though
we pulled off a coup by investing in these
impressive 2009s. Quality is becoming more
regular from this iconic source, and the wines have
all been brought up in barrel by Benjamin Leroux
who will bottle them this spring.

Year three of the new business (which is already enjoying great success) clearly brings the best wines yet, as well as the widest selection. Ben had no intention

The big news here, just five years after the domaine was created, is the arrival of three new vineyards

future, especially in Davids more than capable hands.

Year two of Dominiques own label sees a small cuve of St Vran replacing the Vir-Cless which has now
gone to the Hritiers du Comte Lafon stable, and the introduction of a red Beaune Premier Cru Les Epenottes
(purchased wine in 2009, with the vineyard itself purchased for 2010). These rare wines are exclusive to

Maison Roche de Bellene

Although he is no longer with Maison Nicolas Potel, and indeed having left his name behind, Nicolas has retained many of his previous contracts to supply
his new business, Maison Roche de Bellene. The formula remains the same: delicious wines from major appellations offered at compellingly competitive
prices. His white wines are now starting to compete with his reds.

Santenay, Grand Clos Rousseau, 1er Cru, Maison Camille Giroud
This shows an intriguing mix of slightly earthy but nicely pure

David Jones, Private Account Manager

Pommard, Clos des Epeneaux, 1er Cru, Domaine du Comte Armand
If there was a Grand Cru in Pommard this would
undoubtedly be it, and in years like 2009 you could make
an argument for it. This is where Ben Leroux really puts his
genius to work; he has crafted something quite magical.

Joss Fowler, Private Account Manager

Nuits-St Georges, Clos de la Marchale, 1er Cru
Domaine Jacques Frdric Mugnier

This is another firm favourite of ours, year in, year out. The
Clos de la Marchale did not disappoint in 2009; it is a
chunky, broad fellow yet finished off with an allencompassing gloss. Bravo!

Stuart Rae, Private Account Manager

Chambolle-Musigny, Les Charmes, 1er Cru
Domaine Michle & Patrice Rion

Rion's interpretation of this traditionally feminine wine is

classic, combining intense floral and perfumed aromas with
crystalline red fruits. The finish is where it excels; it is mouthfilling and long, yet remarkably delicate.

There has been very little shift in style at Drouhin, despite the change of generation from Robert Drouhin to
his four children, or of winemaker from Laurence Jobard to Jrme Faure-Brac. Continuity is all, and we
heartily approve of the elegance and sensibility of the Drouhin style. The principal changes have come in the
vineyards which have been converted to biodynamic farming under the watchful eye of Philippe Drouhin.

David Croix

Maison Camille Giroud

There is a sense of everything falling into place here at this small merchant house, less than a decade after it was purchased from the Giroud family and
David Croix was put in charge of vinification. He found his own style with the red wines very early on and has now also refined his touch with whites. The
range remains small and there is rarely much volume of any given wine, but the quality shows a significant talent at work.

Sylvain Loichet

There is no sign that legendary veteran winemaker Jacques Lardire is starting to slow down, though
his eventual successor, Frdric Barnier, has now joined him. The already magnificently appointed
winery on the outskirts of Beaune has had a new wing added as a white wine vinification centre. Out of
a marathon tasting we have selected a dozen of our favourite cuves, including some which space
prevents us from showing below. Check for more at www.bbr.com.

Work on the manor house in Chorey-ls-Beaune is progressing but, though the wines are raised in the
fabulous vaulted cellar there, it will not be until the 2011 harvest that everything happens on site. In
the meantime Sylvain Loichet grows in authority with both his red and white wines, with some
additions to the range of the former to boot.

The wines are always in a relatively early stage when we taste in Thibaults cellar in the autumn but
since then Thibault believes that the wines have been gaining precision during their lvage in barrel.
All the wines below are from his own domaine, though he does also make some cuves from purchased
grapes.

This domaine and its winemaker Pierre Vincent have won trophies at the International Wine Challenge
in each of the last three years. During this time Pierre has been vinifying several of his red wines with
the stems and this has been especially effective with the ripeness of the 2009 vintage. He continues to
display a deft hand with his whites too, most notably with the memorable Clos Blanc de Vougeot.

Patrice Rion

Maxime Rion

Patrice Rion

Domaine Michle & Patrice Rion

The Rions also make a series of wines from

purchased grapes, under the label Patrice Rion.
Included in this selection is the produce of a small
domaine in Chambolle-Musigny where Patrices
team have one contract to run the vineyards and
another to buy the grapes - so in terms of viticulture
and winemaking this is exactly the same as their
own domaine wines. The Amoureuses and
Bonnes-Mares come into this category.

Over the last few years the Rion wines have evolved towards a less extracted style, with the colours a
little lighter and the fruit able to express itself in a more graceful way. Patrice and his son Maxime are
meticulous in both the winery and barrel cellar in order to retain absolute purity in the fruit of the
subsequent wine. The domaine is in excellent hands and has a really bright future ahead of it.

CTE DE NUITS

Sylvain Cathiard

Erwan Faiveley

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard

Domaine Joseph Faiveley

There is tremendous excitement to be found in the cellars of Domaine Sylvain Cathiard as his
magnificently perfumed wines have the virtue of being hugely enjoyable, even in relative youth.

2009 marks the third vintage of the new era at Domaine Joseph Faiveley and the house style now
promotes wines with great purity of fruit, eschewing the dry tannins of earlier years. The 2009s were
picked early and are being bottled a little sooner than usual with more stems used in the vinification,
which is a theme of the vintage. Not all of Faiveleys wines have Domaine status but, of the selection
below, the vineyards are managed by Faiveley though they may not own them all.

Etienne Grivot

Domaine Lamarche

Domaine Jean Grivot

Nicole Lamarche has been in sole control of viticulture and winemaking here for the last three years,
while her cousin Nathalie looks after the sales and marketing side. The domaine is clearly in good
hands and this range of 2009s indicates at a glance the progress which has been made here in the
immediate past.

Etienne Grivot began picking on 9th September, relatively early for the Cte de Nuits, with the intention
of preserving freshness in the fruit. He also requested very light toasting for his new barrels with the
same end in mind. While we were tasting, Etienne waxed lyrical about his philosophy of winemaking:
I look for a balance between energy and seduction. He has certainly delivered this with his stellar
range of 2009s. We are probably being conservative with the upper drinking limit.

Louis Boillot

Domaine Jacques-Frdric Mugnier

Domaine Louis Boillot

Domaine David Clark

As ever, this is the only wine that Freddy Mugnier

releases at this stage. And, as ever, it is a startlingly
fine wine. The Marchale vineyard (the largest
Premier Cru Monopole in the Cte dOr) must be
happy to be in his hands. The small vineyard house
of classical design which dominates the top of the
vineyard has now been restored. The price will be
available in January.

Boillots can be found in most villages of Burgundy.

This one comes from the Volnay family, by way of
Gevrey-Chambertin, before migrating to ChambolleMusigny to share premises with his partner
Ghislaine Barthod. His wines share some of the
same purity and intensity, but Louis very clearly has
his own views. His vineyard holdings reflect both
the family origins in and around Volnay, and the
Gevrey inheritance on his mothers side.

Our talented Scottish friend has somewhat evolved

his style in 2009, partly in response to the vintage
but also as a conscious decision towards
downplaying extraction. David continues to devise
ingenious contraptions to help him in the vineyard.

Domaine des Lambrays

Domaine Ghislaine Barthod

There is a lovely escutcheon hanging from the

ceiling at the far end of the Lambrays cellar showing
two wolves (the emblem of Morey-St Denis) and the
initials GvF Grands vins de France, or Gnther von
Freund, the late owner of Domaine des Lambrays
who sadly died in the autumn. Under his ownership
the estate was rejuvenated and we owe him a great
deal, as we do to long-term rgisseur Thierry Brouin
who has produced some exemplary 2009s. Early
season hail (May 16th) reduced quantities, so there
is, alas, not much of this to go round.

Ghislaine Barthod epitomises what is so good about the village of Chambolle. She is charming and
talented herself and never has anything but good words to say about her neighbouring vignerons. Her
own domaine remains a reference point since all her wines come from within the village, and she has a
lovely range of Premier Cru vineyards to offer. Sadly we do not (yet) receive allocations of all of them.
Ghislaine was the first in the village to start picking in 2009 and certainly does not regret that decision!
Prices will be available in January.

Hamish Orr Ewing, Private Account Manager

Clos de Vougeot, Grand Cru, Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair

Thibault has a wonderful plot in Clos Vougeot and his almost

spiritual approach to winemaking focuses the class further.
This is big, and very tightly knit at the moment a wine with a
great future ahead of it.

Joss Fowler, Private Account Manager

Echezeaux, Grand Cru, Domaine Lamarche

As last year, this is one of the stars of the Lamarche line-up. In

this vintage it shows an extra level of elegance and purity, and
the long finish is fresh and vibrant.

David Jones, Private Account Manager

Clos St Denis, Grand Cru, Domaine Roche de Bellene

Nicolas Potels 2009 Clos St Denis has poise and precision

which are all wrapped up in this brooding, yet beguiling wine.

Stuart Rae, Private Account Manager

Clos des Lambrays, Grand Cru

This Grand Vin is a lovely wine in 2009. It is suffused
with graceful raspberry and strawberry flavours, along
with some smoke and spice high notes. It has fine
depth and considerable length to complete the
offering. Drink 2016-2025.

Nicolas Rossignol-Trapet

Dujac Fils & Pre

Domaine Sylvie Esmonin

Domaine Rossignol-Trapet

An outstanding range of wines from both this

ngociant arm at Dujac, and from the domaine,
whose wines will not be released until much later in
the year. Their preference for using the stems during
vinification fits perfectly with the style of the vintage.

Sylvie finds 2009 a great vintage, with some of the

same aromatic notes as 2002, along with the
tannins of 2005 and a proper cycle of seasons: a
cold winter, an unsettled spring and a properly
warm summer after storms in July. It is now nearly
ten years since Sylvies current style began to
evolve and it is most encouraging to see how her
wines from vintages such as 2002 are progressing.
The stems and the new oak blend in very well with
the pure, concentrated fruit.

It has been fascinating to chart the process by which this producer has moved from being one of the
decent addresses to an outstanding source of the great wines of Gevrey-Chambertin. It is only
reasonable for them to increase prices for the top wines in their range because they clearly merit being
on a par with other leading domaines in the area. In 2009 all the wines are brilliant, from the lowliest
Gevrey (and perhaps especially the Beaune) upwards.

RED
Gevrey-Chambertin
Bright cherry fruit and succulent, medium intensity
make this the purest example of Gevrey to date from
Dujac Fils & Pre, with refreshing acidity behind. Drink
2012-2015.

Morey-St Denis
This has a delicious nose that is suave and sensual,
with a little more meat on the bone than the GevreyChambertin, as well as a pleasing acidity behind to
maintain freshness. Drink 2012-2015.

Chambolle-Musigny
This wine is full of energy but is still very poised, with a
charming little touch of oak and real elegance to the
fruit. It is a very stylish Burgundy at an affordable
price. Drink 2012-2015.

Sylvie Esmonin

RED
Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes
This wine is wearing a rich, full, velvety purple cloak. It
displays a bundle of energy on the palate and a huge
mouthful of predominantly red fruit, backed by the
fresh finish which is allied to the use of stems.
Drink 2015-2020.
79011B 12 x 75CL PER CASE

Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos St Jacques, 1er Cru
This wine went through its malolactic fermentation
late, so is very restrained compared to most. It has a
magical intensity to the bouquet and there is a massive
block of red and black fruit on the palate, together with
a powerful finish. This will benefit from a few more
months aging in barrel. Drink 2018-2025.

Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes

pleasure to drink, as the persistence of the finish is
superb. Drink 2013-2018.

Beaune, Teurons, 1er Cru
We dont normally put this bottling in the en primeur
catalogue but it is so good this year that we could not
resist. The fruit is completely mouth-filling and finishes
with classic mineral notes. Drink 2013-2018.

Gevrey-Chambertin, Aux Etelois
From a vineyard adjacent to the Grands Crus, this is
richer and riper than the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes. It has
intense black fruit with some brambly qualities from
the inclusion of stems, and is still admirably fresh at
the finish. Drink 2014-2019.

Gevrey-Chambertin, Petite Chapelle, 1er Cru
This Premier Cru crouches at the feet of ChapelleChambertin Grand Cru. There was evidently no
difficulty in ripening the fruit in 2009 and it comes
across as rich and sumptuous, with fine silky tannins.

Latricires-Chambertin, Grand Cru
This wine has beautiful, elegant, deep red fruit and is

Chapelle-Chambertin, Grand Cru
Another wine with very fine colour but a slightly more
discreet nose than the Latricires-Chambertin, this
builds steadily to the back of the palate, fattening
nicely before reaching a precise, yet exceptionally long
finish. Drink 2015-2022+.

Le Chambertin, Grand Cru
The 2009 exudes mellow but glowing red, purple and
black fruit flavours. On the one hand the fruit is very
tightly wound, but it nonetheless expands majestically
the longer the wine stays in the mouth, with a
surprisingly refined finish after the sumptuous fruit. It
is hard to do justice to this wine with words.

Christian Srafin

Domaine Christian Srafin

Christian Srafin has now reached retirement age not that you can stop him working. The business is
being officially looked after by his daughter Karine and niece Frdrique, who is in charge in the
vineyards. It is too early to say if this will mean any modification in style, but what is clear is that the
sumptuous fruit of 2009 provides the perfect backdrop for the domaines relatively high proportion of
new oak. These are really impressive wines.
RED
Gevrey-Chambertin
A fine red-purple in colour with staggering intensity of
fruit on the nose, this is a very tightly wound wine with
good acidity. The freshness of the fruit indicates that
there is nothing over-ripe here. Drink 2014-2018.

Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes
This cuve is selected from well-placed older vintages

Morey-St Denis, Les Millandes, 1er Cru

bond and are inclusive of freight and insurance
(but are exclusive of duty and VAT).

Delivery and Storage

Following shipment in 2011, your wines, by

On receipt of this email, or the subsequent

we can arrange this as per our normal delivery
terms. Any rent charged on wines withdrawn
within 30 days of the date of invoice for rent will
be credited.
Customers who elect to have their wine cleared
from bond will be required to pay duty and VAT at
the prevailing rates at the time of delivery. These
rates are currently 20.25 per case for duty and
20% for VAT on the original cost and duty.*
