some heavy storms, most notably on 13th and 14th July when over
100mm of rain fell. This made life difficult for the vignerons as they
could not get into the vineyards, but fortunately caused no real damage.
The weather continued unsettled, with alternating hot and cool days,
and further storms on 22nd and 23rd July. There were occasional
signs of mildew but these were very localised. Otherwise the vines
were looking good and the grapes healthy, with vraison around the
end of the month, when the weather was improving.
August was glorious, developing into a small heatwave towards the
middle of the month before the weather broke with a welcome storm
(thunder and rain rather than anything worse) on the morning of
Friday 21st. Apart from a brief incursion from the tail end of Hurricane
Bill (25th and 26th), the weather stayed fine for the rest of the month
and growers could hardly contain their optimism.
The change of the moon suggested more unsettled weather but apart
from a drab first week of September, it looked as if the fine weather had
returned for the duration of the harvest. Picking started in the Mconnais
from around 2nd September, in the Cte de Beaune from the 5th and a
few days later in the Cte de Nuits. It continued in Chablis and the
Auxerrois through the middle of the month, in glorious sunshine
For both colours, the grapes were picked at good sugar levels but
without fear of unsuitably high degrees; the typical profile falls
between 13 and 13.5%, not reaching 14% or above, and the grapes
were fully physiologically ripe.
The key to success in 2009 has been to retain a fresh quality to wines
which are naturally rich. One technique for the reds which has been
widely used is to incorporate a percentage of the stems during
vinification. Some domaines have always done this, the majority have
tended not to. However there is a movement now towards some whole
bunch vinification with stems, and it was widely used in 2009.
RED WINES
One is tempted to want to play down the hype surrounding the 2009
vintage but it is hard to do so. While this is not 2005, a vintage of
unparalleled density and a firm tannic structure for exceptionally long
ageing, 2009 ranks among the very best vintages of recent times. At
harvest, the feeling was similar in quality and style to 1999, another
year where a large crop was able to ripen fully during a fine warm
summer. Tasting the wines, there is more of a parallel with 1990 but
maybe we should look as far back as 1959 for the best comparison, a
beautifully ripe vintage that delivered stellar quality for both red and
white wines. Time and again I find myself using the word graceful in
my tasting notes.
WHITE WINES
Contrary to initial expectations, many of the white wines in 2009 are
absolutely stunning. They began to show their true qualities only after
the summer, when a mineral backbone appeared in support of the
graceful, ripe fruit. I was reminded of 1992, completely delicious
wines designed for the medium rather than the long term. There may
not be enough acidity in 2009 to make really old bones, but they will
be absolutely compelling in their first ten years, with the most exciting
subtleties of flavours, magnificently multi-layered, such as we have
not seen in recent times.
KEY POINTS
CHABLIS
Benot Droin
Didier Sguier
When Benot Droin took over from his father Jean-Paul, he set about refining production in two key areas:
yields were reduced to allow for greater concentration in the raw material and the oak regime was
reworked so that each vineyard could be treated differently according to its needs. This makes tasting the
full range of Benots wines, in his modern installation just below the slopes of the Grand Crus, a
fascinating experience.
Theres no question that Fvre, in its current incarnation, is at the very top of the Chablis tree. Didier
Sguier has been in charge since Henriot bought the Domaine in 1998 and they now own 12 hectares of
Premier Cru vineyards and no less than 16 hectares of Grand Crus. Everything is harvested by hand and
the Premier Crus are vinified in 40-50% oak, the Grand Crus receiving 70-80% without using new wood.

Jean-Philippe Bret
Bret Brothers
Bret Brothers Domaine de la Soufrandire has been one of the most impressive producers in the
Mconnais over the past ten years and this year the two founder brothers, Jean-Philippe and JeanGuillaume, have been joined by a third sibling, Marc-Antoine. Work is about to begin to extend the
winery, not with a view to expanding the range in any significant way, but because more space is
needed to manage current production. The wines are certified organic and biodynamic and have the
attraction of being immediately appealing to drink.
WHITE
Mcon-Villages
This cuve is largely made from declassified barrels
acquired from grander appellations including PouillyFuiss. Best enjoyed young, it shows a lovely contrast
between soft-centred fruit and a crunchy structure.

Olivier Merlin
Olivier Merlin
The Merlins brand new cuvrie was up and running for the start of the 2009 harvest and this made it
much easier to manage than in previous years. Next year their fabulous-looking new vineyard that is
planted on the steep south-facing slope above the village will also come on stream, and everything looks
set fair for a fine future for Olivier and Corinne which they have richly deserved, having created their
business from a standing start.
WHITE
Mcon-La Roche Vineuse, Vieilles Vignes

Olivier Lamy
Jean-Yves Devevey
Olivier Lamy is one of the few producers who actually made less wine in 2009 than 2008, which is
bad news for us as these are superlative wines. He started picking earlier than most, as he judged
everything to be ripe, so there are no high degrees of alcohol here and the wines are deliciously fresh.
This domaine remains the standout address in St Aubin.
There was a terrific moment for Jean-Yves in March 2010 when he signed an agreement to farm two
hectares of Rully. Unfortunately, it had not yet been pruned and time was running out but 20 of his vigneron
friends, including several in this catalogue, rallied round and together they completed the job in a single day.
This vineyard will come on stream next year while the Rully Premier Cru and Chassagne Premier Cru,
missing in 2008, are back for 2009.

10th September.

Gerard Boudot
Jean-Baptiste Bouzereau
Etienne Sauzet
Veteran Gerard Boudot was supremely relaxed in his cellar when we went to taste the 2009s a
fabulous vintage from a domaine that has been on top form in recent years, while the next generation
(daughter Emilie and son-in-law Benot) are steadily taking on responsibilities. Picking started early on
7th September, while the long slow fermentation has helped to build subtle layers of flavour into the
wines this year. This is a really excellent result. Prices will be available in January.
2009 is the first vintage made from start to finish at Jean-Baptistes sparkling new premises and one can
already see a beneficial dividend in the quality and purity of fruit. Jean-Baptiste began harvesting on 7th
September and is really happy with the resulting volumes which are substantially up on previous years.
The 2009 wines are really fine and, with absolutely healthy fruit, no problems were experienced with
either the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations.

Patrick Javillier
Arnaud Ente
Patrick Javillier began picking on 6th September, having advanced his start date on seeing how quickly the
grapes were ripening. None of the wines exceed 13% alcohol and he has retained good acidity
throughout. This is yet another wonderful range from Patrick, who maintains his knack of building superb
texture into his wines thanks to his management of the lees.
Arnaud and Marie-Odile began picking on 1st September 2009 which, as usual, was well before their
neighbours; when you run your vineyards as meticulously as they do, you tend to get ripe grapes that bit
earlier. The wines are aged for the first year in barrel, mostly the larger demi-muid format for the first three
wines below, then given a further six months in tank. These are some of the greatest white wines in
Burgundy, and priced accordingly.

Jean-Philippe Fichet
Operations have now moved down to a custombuilt winery on the outskirts of Chagny, the loss of
the atmospheric old Burgundian cellars being
more than compensated by the significant
upgrade in working conditions. Happily the
distinguished features of courteous veteran
Michel Niellon are still to be found, alongside his
son-in-law and grandson.
Jean-Philippe is one of the most meticulous producers we know, with never a barrel out of line, nor a
spanner out of place in his workshop. His wines are for those who like purity and he believes that 2009
has everything required to be an exceptional vintage. There was a good size crop that ripened without
excessive sugar levels appearing at the end and no problems in the cellar either, where the wines are now
matured for 12 months in barrel before they spend a further six months in tank.

CTE DE BEAUNE
Etienne de Montille
Antoine Jobard
Domaine de Montille
Etienne de Montille has been increasingly interested in vinifying his red wines with the use of stems and
ripe fruit recently, and in 2009 he was able to take this technique further, with between two-thirds and
100% stems being included in most wines. This influences both the aromatic profile and the structure of
the wines, adding complexity and staying power at the expense of pure red fruit. The De Montille 2009s
are built to last and, as usual, are an excellent range.
Antoine is now firmly in the driving seat at this fabulous domaine, in succession to his father Franois
who has finally retired after delivering glorious, long-lived Meursaults throughout his 50-year career.
Fully ripe, without exceeding 13.5% alcohol, Antoine has made some glorious 2009s and we are
delighted to have significantly increased our allocation this year. Since 2007 the domaine has been
farmed organically, though without certificate.

Michel Lafarge
Benjamin Leroux
There are domaines which attract you for the quality of the wines they produce, and those where the people
involved are quite exceptional in their own right. Domaine Michel Lafarge ticks both those boxes, not least
because of the extraordinary persona of the ever present Michel Lafarge, allied to the expertise of son
Frdric. It is always a pleasure to visit top-class domaines and sometimes it is humbling. Make sure you
fight for an allocation of these brilliant 2009s.
Benjamin Leroux is surely the eminence blonde of the Cte de Beaune, the go-to person for other vignerons
in need of advice. His period in charge at the Domaine du Comte Armand (since 1999) has resulted in a
series of brilliant wines, with perhaps the 2009 representing the pinnacle of his career to date.

The big news here, just five years after the domaine was created, is the arrival of three new vineyards

blended together in this first year. Building works at headquarters have now finished and all is set for a fine
future, especially in Davids more than capable hands.
Year two of Dominiques own label sees a small cuve of St Vran replacing the Vir-Cless which has now
gone to the Hritiers du Comte Lafon stable, and the introduction of a red Beaune Premier Cru Les Epenottes
(purchased wine in 2009, with the vineyard itself purchased for 2010). These rare wines are exclusive to

heartily approve of the elegance and sensibility of the Drouhin style. The principal changes have come in the

There is no sign that legendary veteran winemaker Jacques Lardire is starting to slow down, though

Work on the manor house in Chorey-ls-Beaune is progressing but, though the wines are raised in the

CTE DE NUITS
Sylvain Cathiard
Erwan Faiveley
There is tremendous excitement to be found in the cellars of Domaine Sylvain Cathiard as his
magnificently perfumed wines have the virtue of being hugely enjoyable, even in relative youth.
2009 marks the third vintage of the new era at Domaine Joseph Faiveley and the house style now
promotes wines with great purity of fruit, eschewing the dry tannins of earlier years. The 2009s were
picked early and are being bottled a little sooner than usual with more stems used in the vinification,
which is a theme of the vintage. Not all of Faiveleys wines have Domaine status but, of the selection
below, the vineyards are managed by Faiveley though they may not own them all.

Nathalie Lamarche
Etienne Grivot
Domaine Lamarche
Nicole Lamarche has been in sole control of viticulture and winemaking here for the last three years,
while her cousin Nathalie looks after the sales and marketing side. The domaine is clearly in good
hands and this range of 2009s indicates at a glance the progress which has been made here in the
immediate past.
Etienne Grivot began picking on 9th September, relatively early for the Cte de Nuits, with the intention
of preserving freshness in the fruit. He also requested very light toasting for his new barrels with the
same end in mind. While we were tasting, Etienne waxed lyrical about his philosophy of winemaking:
I look for a balance between energy and seduction. He has certainly delivered this with his stellar
range of 2009s. We are probably being conservative with the upper drinking limit.

Ghislaine Barthod
Ghislaine Barthod epitomises what is so good about the village of Chambolle. She is charming and
talented herself and never has anything but good words to say about her neighbouring vignerons. Her
own domaine remains a reference point since all her wines come from within the village, and she has a
lovely range of Premier Cru vineyards to offer. Sadly we do not (yet) receive allocations of all of them.
Ghislaine was the first in the village to start picking in 2009 and certainly does not regret that decision!

Domaine Rossignol-Trapet
It has been fascinating to chart the process by which this producer has moved from being one of the
decent addresses to an outstanding source of the great wines of Gevrey-Chambertin. It is only
reasonable for them to increase prices for the top wines in their range because they clearly merit being
on a par with other leading domaines in the area. In 2009 all the wines are brilliant, from the lowliest
Gevrey (and perhaps especially the Beaune) upwards.
