Chanson Geste
Main Gestures
The Chanson de Roland has four thousand two lines (in its oldest
(dans sa version la plus ancienne ;
It counts nine thousand in a manuscript from the end of the 13th
century) in old French divided into assonances on a leash,
transmitted and broadcast in song by troubadours and jugglers = Elle
It is inspired, three centuries later, by the deadly combat in the
Pyrenees of the knight Roland, prefect of the Marche de Bretagne
and his comrades in arms against a force still difficult to identify,

The peasant says in his saying that such a thing that one disdains is better than
one does not believes.
Because he who neglects his study quickly risks keeping silent about something
that later would be much to please.
This is why Chretien de Troyes says that it is right that everyone must think and
apply in all circumstances to speak well and to learn well.
So, he shoots of an adventure tale a very beautiful composition, thanks to which
one can prove and demonstrate
That he who does not cultivate his knowledge as much as God gives him the
grace to do so, does not act wisely.
It is the tale of Erec, the son of Lac, who before kings and counts dismembers
and corrupts those who claim to make a living from the art of storytelling.
I will now begin the story that will remain forever in memory, as long as
Christianity lasts. Of this Chretien boasts

There is a waiting effect and above all and above all the text increases the
opposition between Ganelon and the other characters
Ganelon = angry or fearful character = not courageous
Roland’s companions = a small elite of knights
Ganelon
Charlemagne
Ganelon and Roland = hate each other = adds meaning to the text
Roland = text gives him a negative message = Blancadrin is convinced Roland’s
song is negative
We go looking for things and forget that these characters exist
Fieré = doesn’t always mean negative
