Humanitarian scandal
For this competition, 8 stadiums have been built
The Al-Bayt Stadium, Lusail Stadium, Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Al Janoub Stadium, Al Thumâma
Stadium, Education City Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium and Stadium 974.
QATAR WORLD CUP OF SHAME. This is the name that Amnesty International has attribued to this
year's world cup.
To build these stadiums, Qatar has employed people from all over the world, especially workers
from Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India. They are more than 1 .7 millions foreign to
have worked for the construction of the Qatari stadiums for this competition, According to the
NGO Amnesty International.
She also found 7 absolutely outrageous points about the working conditions of the migrants, which
would strongly resemble slavery.
3.Delayed payment
Sometimes wages are not paid for several months. They are unable to buy food, send money to
their families back home, or make payments on recruitment credits.
5.impossible to leave the camp or the site, to leave the country or the job
Despite the Qatari law, some employers don't issue residence permits and do not renew them.
They are important because they show that workers are allowed to live and work in Qatar. Without
them, workers can be imprisoned or sentenced. For this reason, some of these men are afraid to
leave the camp or the site
For leaving the country, they must have a document that employers refuse to give to employees.
6.Threats
If workers complain about their conditions or ask for help, they are often intimidated and
threatened by their employers
7.Forced labor
One of the enterprises subjects their employees to forced labor. Workers who refuse to work
because of their conditions are threatened with having their pay retained or handed over to the
police to be removed in other country without receiving the wages due to them.
You can imagine that these horrible conditions are not without consequences. There were victims.
Indeed, the newspaper "The Guardian" has counted through government sources, more than 6700
workers from South Asia died between 2010 and 2020, and this number would be much higher
according to the same newspaper because it does not take into account the workers who died
since 2020, nor the dead workers from the Philippines or Kenya.
The emirate has imposed several rules on visitors and fans going there.
Here they are:
-Prohibition of physical contact with hostesses
-Ban on homosexuality
-It's recommended to know some gestures of politeness like eating only with the right hand, the
other hand being reserved for personal hygiene
-It's forbidden to enter the country with certain products: pork or alcohol. Drugs can lead to the
death penalty.
-The consumption of alcohol will be strongly supervised: it is forbidden to drink it in the public
place and to be intoxicated.
-It's necessary to respect the rules of dress. No short dresses or shorts, but long pants and skirts.
Women must also cover their breasts and necks, the hijab is not obligatory.
