Last month, Lori Lightfoot was elected Mayor of Chica-
go. She will be the first African-American female mayor
to hold this position. The 56-year-old former federal
prosecutor, who describes herself as an “out and proud
black lesbian,” will also be the first openly gay mayor of
Chicago. She entered the mayor’s race as a reformer and
outsider, pledging to tackle City Hall’s insider corrup-
tion, and she won with an astonishing 74 percent of the
vote. During her campaign, she promised to clean up
city government by implementing a two-term limit on
mayors and a ban on outside employment that conflicts
with city business for elected officials and city workers.

UNUSUAL ROYAL
BABY TRADITIONS

lotte.

2. Sir Marcus Setchell, who was Queen

Elizabeth II's surgeon-gynaecologist and
who delivered Prince George, has since
retired. In his only interview about Prince
George’s birth, Sir Marcus described the
midwifery team as “perfectly wonderful”.
During an interview on Woman's Hour'
BBC Radio 4, the gynaecologist added:
“You just keep reminding yourself that
although it's very important, for the cou-
ple and the about-to-be-born baby, it's just
another healthy young couple giving birth
to a hopefully very healthy baby. And I
constantly reminded myself of that so that
the pressures of the hundreds of media
people outside the hospital didn't affect
me, at least not more than minimally.”

CUSTODY
3. The parents don’t have custody of their
children. A law enacted more than three
centuries ago means that the Queen has
full legal custody of any child born into
the royal family. The law, called “The
Grand Opinion for the Prerogative Con-
cerning the Royal Family,” was introduced
by King George I in 1717. “George I did not
get along with his son, the future George
II,” explains royal expert Marlene Koenig.
“I believe it came about when the Prince
of Wales [George II] did not want to have
the godparent for his son that his father
Princess Elizabeth (later Queen
Elizabeth II) in her christening wanted - so George I got Parliament to
gown, circa 1926. (SIPA) come up with something.”

4. An annual register published in 1772

states that the then King had the care of
the royal children and grandchildren, and
the presumptive heir to the crown. How-
ever, while law dictates that the Queen
legally has custody of her grandchildren,
Koenig doesn’t think she would ever act
upon the right. “I would doubt that the
Queen would interfere. [It’s] more of a
formality,” she says. “I think the Queen
has let her children raise their kids.”

EASEL
5. A royal birth is traditionally announced

going forward. This angered some British citizens who received the new pass-

A GREEK REVIVAL
Reprise économique en Grèce

Overview of Exarcheia, where many Chinese investors

Athens. (Eirini Vourloumis/The New York Times)

Vocable: How did you become a newspaper

cartoonist, and then a graphic novel and
children’s book author?
Posy Simmonds: I’ve always liked drawing.
I can remember being three and having a
big fat crayon in my hand and drawing lit-
tle men with buttons on their coats. When
I was a bit older I wanted to be a painter. I
spent some time at La Sorbonne in France,
when I was seventeen. When I came back
to England, I went to the Central School of

three years of graphic design. When I left,
I thought I would work for the press or I
would illustrate. Now students have a web-

every editor and publisher that you could
think of. While I was waiting to earn some
money like that, I cleaned houses, I walked
people’s dogs, I babysat... I lived in London.
And one day, I got a phone call from The

SILICON VALLEY’S
QUEST FOR
IMMORTALITY
