SCHOOLS 4 CLIMATE ACTION

Les écoliers agissent pour le climat
Londres
On March 15, with the support of some of the world’s biggest environmental groups, tens of
thousands of schoolchildren, in at least two dozen European countries and nearly 30 U.S. states,
plan to skip school to demand their governments take action on climate change. They want
nations to commit to cutting fossil-fuel emissions in half in the next 10 years to avoid catastrophic
global warming. This climate movement was started by Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old student from Sweden, who has
been skipping school to demonstrate in front of her country’s parliament building every Friday since September. She
has inspired tens of thousands of students in the United Kingdom (where this photo was taken), Sweden, Australia,
Germany and Belgium, among others, who have begun protesting in their own cities as a result. March 15 is expected to
be a global strike, called for by Greta Thunberg.

THE PLASTIC BACKLASH

FAST FASHION FUELING PUSH

FOR SUSTAINABLE APPAREL

Parkville, Md., Mariah Lamm stum-

work and a skirt, vest and accent scarf for
going out, all for about $30. The 22-year-old
Towson woman makes frequent trips to the
thrift superstore — and not just for the steep
discounts. Buying used clothing, she says,
lets her do her part to curb fashion’s growing
impact on the environment.

DEATH OF THE PRIVATE SELF

RENT CONTROLS ARE

BACK IN VOGUE
capitale britannique ?

And understandably so. The age of rent control
in Britain, which lasted from 1915 to 1989, was
not a glorious one. Some properties had their
rents fixed in cash terms from 1939 to 1957,
resulting in a real-terms fall of 60%. As land-
lords’ returns dwindled they skimped on re-
pairs and upgrades. Many pulled out of the
market. The decision in the late 1980s to liber-
alise rents breathed life back into the market.

Stan & Ollie

ILLINOIS MINIMUM WAGE HIKE

A bill to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour in Illinois has passed through the state Senate and is going
to be presented to the state House of Representatives. The plan would increase the base wage from $8.25 an
hour to $15 in stages by 2025. It would benefit 1.4 million workers, or nearly one-quarter of the state’s
workforce. Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker is a strong proponent of the bill and is expected to sign it into law
immediately if it is approved by the House. Four other states and Washington, D.C. either already require a $15
minimum wage or will do so before Illinois. However, Illinois Republicans lawmakers have expressed their
concerns about the bill, arguing that it could hurt businesses and drive them to leave the state.
