L’installation artistique : une expérience de soi dans l’espace et dans le temps

L’art de l’installation a plus de cinquante ans. Il a modifié notre rapport à l’art en sollicitant le corps
tout entier, en démontrant sa sensibilité à l’espace, à l’environnement, aux êtres vivants avec lesquels
il est en constante interaction. Cette publication, issue de journées d’études organisées par l’équipe
interuniversitaire Langarts en 2017, analyse cette modification de la perception induite par les
installations à travers des approches théoriques et des œuvres devenues classiques ou emblématiques,
de Carl Andre, Dan Graham, Jean-Michel Sanejouand, Philippe Parréno, ainsi que l’influence de cette
forme d’art sur la musique. Elle examine également sa réception en Asie, révélant où elle entre en
résonance avec les représentations et pratiques asiatiques anciennes, souvent associées au spirituel.
L’articulation corps/espace/imaginaire est le point commun des différentes installations. Ces
installations révèlent le chiasme entre le corps individuel et l’espace extérieur dans la représentation
intérieure de l’expérience. Les textes témoignent du processus par lequel le voyage physique du corps
du spectateur dans un espace matériel — parfois invisible — et ses composantes structurelles se
déroulent dans le temps, comme une succession de micro-expériences.
Cette publication ajoute à la littérature existante un niveau d’analyse théorique, expérientielle et
transculturelle qui la rend pertinente pour des domaines connexes tels que la philosophie, la
psychologie, les études sociales, les études asiatiques. Elle a pour ambition de favoriser la prise de
conscience de la rencontre active qui caractérise toute expérience de vie.

The artistic installation: an experience of self in space and time

The art of installation is more than fifty years old. It has changed our relationship to art by soliciting
the whole body, by demonstrating its sensitivity to space, to the environment, to living beings with
which it is in constant interaction. This publication, the result of workshops organized by the Langarts
inter-university team in 2017, analyzes this change in perception induced by installations through
theoretical approaches and works that have become classical or emblematic, by Carl Andre, Dan
Graham, Jean-Michel Sanejouand, Philippe Parréno, as well as the influence of this art form on music.
It also examines its reception in Asia, revealing that it resonates with ancient Asian representations
and practices, often associated with the spiritual.

The articulation of body/space/imagination is the common point of the different installations,

revealing the chiasmus between the individual body and external space in the inner representation of
experience.

The texts testify to the process by which the physical journey of the spectator's body in a material
space - sometimes invisible - and its structural components take place in time, as a succession of
micro-experiences.

This publication adds to the existing literature a level of theoretical, experiential and cross-cultural
analysis that makes it relevant to related fields such as philosophy, psychology, social studies, Asian
studies. Its ambition is to foster awareness of the active encounter that characterizes any life
experience.
