Since this year started, Chinese importers are reticent to buy timber from
Cameroon. This is revealed by a sectoral report published by the international
tropical timber association. According to the association, this reticence is due to
the increase in the price of timber. This follows the decision of Cameroon’s
authorities, in 2018 finance law, to increase the tax on the export of sawn wood.
With the increase of their exports’ duties (between 2016 and 2018, the duties on
exports of sawn wood has increased from 17.5% to 30%), the local timber growers
also increased their prices. What Chinese importers are not pleased with. The
increase of export duties could have a boomerang effect if the Chinese continue to
ignore Cameroon’s timber. Indeed, according to “Forêt et Communauté”, a group
of NGOs involved in forest management, China has become the first destination for
Cameroon’s timber (timber being the first non-oil product exported)

Electricity: Nachtigal Dam will reduce electricity generating cost,
says Elisabeth Huybens
Nachtigal Dam (400 MW) which will be built on Sanaga river is an excellent
opportunity for Cameroon. This is at least what Elisabeth Huybens, sectoral
manager of social development for World Bank in Cameroon, says. During a press
conference in Yaoundé earlier this February, she said: “Nachtigal Dam is an
incredibly useful project. It is a significant project which will help increase the
electricity generating capacity by 30% at low production cost: 7 cents per kWh ( a
little more than CFA35). Presently, the average production cost is 14 cents (about
CFA70)”, Intégration reported. For the record, the construction of Nachtigal dam is
steered by EDF, the International Finance Corporation and Cameroon. It requires
CFA656 billion and it is planned to be commissioned in 2021.
ICT: Kerawa merges with Afrimalin to become the leader of classified ads in
Francophone Africa
The Cameroonian classified ads website kerawa.com announces that it has signed a
merger agreement with Afrimalin. The website that bought Leportail.ci earlier in
2017 communicated this news in a statement published on February 12, 2018. The
statement reveals that the new entity formed by Leportail.ci, Kerawa.com and
Afrimalin.com will become the leader of classified ads in Francophone Africa. “For
us, it seemed natural to merge to progress quickly. We have decided to merge with
kerawa.com and leportail.ci which are leaders in Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire
respectively. With this, we can exceed the million visitors monthly and increase
the countries we cover from 8 to 10”, explains Thibault Launay, co-founder of
Afrimalin. So, thanks to this merger, Afrimalin is now present in 10 countries,
Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Guinea, DR Congo, Senegal,
Congo Brazzaville and Gabon.

assez exemplaire », a souligné l’Élysée.
