Those engaged in the task of interpreting the recent history of philosophy have
found it increasingly difficult to avoid reference to Nietzsche's pivotal influence on
the direction of twentieth-century thought. This can be seen clearly in Stanley
Rosen's The Limits of Analysis, for example, where Nietzsche is described as cur-
rently in the process of "conquering late twentieth-century philosophy in a number
of disguises." 1 And, in Charles Taylor's Sources of the Self, Nietzsche is located at
