Management, unlike other subjects such as economics, philosophy, political science is of a
recent origin and hence, a relatively new subject. Management is a vital aspect of the
economic life of man, which is an organized group activity. And according to the book it is
the effective and efficient integration and coordination of resources to achieve desired
objectives.
As a conclusion, Management is creative problem solving. This creative problem solving is
accomplished through four functions of management: planning, organizing, leading, and
controlling. The intended result is the use of an organization’s resources in a way that
accomplishes its mission and objectives.
Management definition:
Effective and efficient integration and coordination of resources to achieve desired objectives.
Managers definition:
people who are responsible for controlling or administering an organization or group of staff
Responsibility of a manager:
integrate and combine the business's human, capital, and technological resources, in the best
way possible to achieve the organization's objectives.
EFFICIENCY: (efficacité)
Ratio of benefits to costs as resources are used and depleted to produce goods and services.
—> how well something is done. Doing things right
Ratio des avantages par rapport aux coûts au fur et à mesure que les ressources sont utilisées
et épuisées pour produire des biens et des services
EFFECTIVENESS:
Refers to the degree to which the company's goals are being attained.
—> how useful something is. Using the right thing
Fait référence à la mesure dans laquelle les objectifs de l'entreprise sont atteints.
Objectives are targets managers establish in terms of sales, revenues, profits, DNA
performance. These targets serve to direct the efforts of all employees toward the same
objectives. Resources are the people, capital, technology, and time managers use to achieve
the business's objectives. By integrating and coordinating these resources, managers can
effectively reach the objectives.
Planning = assessing future conditions and anticipating actions to take to reach the
organization's objectives.
-strategic planning: process in which an organization's leaders define their vision for the
future and identify their organization's goals and objectives. The process includes establishing
the sequence in which those goals should be realized so that the organization can reach its
stated vision.
-tactical planning: breaking down a long-term strategic plan into smaller and more distinct
short-term plans.
-operational planning: the result of a team or department working to execute a strategic
plan. It is a future-oriented process that maps out department goals, capabilities, and budgets
to promote the success of team-based activities designed to support the strategic plan.
Organizing = establishing the basic framework of formal relationships among the
organization's tasks, activities, and people.
Directing = guiding and motivating employees to accomplish the organization's objectives.
Controlling = the process of monitoring and evaluating the business's performance and
determining how to correct problems that detract from that performance.
THE MANAGEMENT PYRAMID AND THE TYPES OF SKILS THAT ARE IMPORTANT IN
EACH LEVEL:
Top management = the CEO and other vice-presidents who make major strategic decisions
in the organization. Conceptual skills are very important at this level.
Middle management = of regional managers, sales managers, plant managers, and
department managers who must implement the strategies and plans developed by top
management. Although human relations skills are important at all levels, they are particularly
important at this level.
Supervisory management = those managers who directly supervise and coordinate the work
of non-management employees. Technical skills are more important at this level than at the
other levels.
became known as Administrative Theory. It looks at the organization from the top
down and sets out steps for managers to get the best from employees and to run a
business efficiently.
Peters and Waterman knew that common management theories played an important
role in how anxious or afraid people were in their workplace. Therefore, they
developed a self-analysis tool for corporations to assess their standing, which often
decreased fear and anxiety because corporations were in much better shape than
originally thought. Discover the impact this team of theorists had on the working
population, and consider using the theory today, with the following information:

Organizational structure helps us to determine the authority relationships among the members
of an organization, and hence it influences the behavior of individuals, groups and divisions
within the organizations. Among others, the structure of an organization affects the division of
tasks, communication systems, decision-making patterns and finally the way how people
relate to each other. Depending on the specific nature of the firm, organizational structures
may be standardized or open.
These objectives Influence organizational structure at the top levels and provide
guidelines that influence behavior throughout the organization.
AUTHORITY:
One of the basic means of coordinating among jobs, departments, and managers.
AUTHORITY’S COMPONENTS:
⁃ Delegation is the process of assigning authority to someone else.
Authority is affected by : unbroken hierarchy of authority that links managers and their
subordinates
⁃ The chain of command: unbroken hierarchy of authority that links managers and
their subordinates.
⁃ Unity of command: each employee should be responsible to only one manager.
⁃ Span of control: the number of subordinates a manager supervises.
⁃ Line/staff positions : have a direct flow of vertical authority associated with
organizational objectives, while staff employees provide support to line
employees and typically have limited authority.
⁃ The profit center: highly independent unit or division that is given broad
decision-making authority as it makes acceptable profits. This arrangement
allows managers to make decisions without interference from top management.
⁃ committee organization: structure in which authority is given to a group of
individuals rather than to one person. At the top level, an office of the president
structure consists of two or three executives who work together as a committee
to reach top level decisions. Lower-level committees also can be created,
especially to work on important projects
⁃ matrix organization: specific projects or problems that aid too large for
committees. Project teams are created by grouping employees from functional
departments such as engineering, design, production, and finance. These
employees are still responsible to their functional departments but concentrate
their efforts on the specific project. The matrix structure is commonly used by
companies that have many special projects and in high-tech companies that
emphasize research and development.

sport coaches are supposed to inspire their players they can develop psychologically
motivated athletes with positive self-regard by creating self-worth and a sense of belonging.
for instance,
An athlete’s motivation plays a fundamental role in performance and perceived ability.
But The question to be asked
Is the way a coach motivates his players the same as a manager to his employees
The answer is of course no
And that’s what we’re going to discuss in this topic: Human relations motivation and
performance
.2 Describe the impact that scientific management and the Hawthorne studies had on
motivation theories.
Scientific management, pioneered by Frederick W. Taylor, involved the systematic
most efficient way to perform a job and teaching workers those methods in the
possible. Taylor's principles included matching workers' skills to those their j o b s
redesigning the tools and methods used on the job. With this approach, Tayolr
tent improvements in productivity.
The Hawthorne studies revealed the importance of the human or psychological factor
in performance. Worker performances increased even in experiments designed to
deaescr performance, such as reducing the light intensity. The researchers decided that
het increased motivation was due to feelings of being special due to membership in the
work group, worker participation in decisions affecting the work, the social
environment of the work group, and the additional pay workers earned from being
more productive.
The fundamental conclusion of human relations approach is that management must recognize
the significance of the human factor towards increasing human efficiency at work; and must
take decisions based on human considerations (like needs, values, aspirations, beliefs,
attitudes of people) rather than only on physical-technical considerations.
