SESSION 1:
Direct to Consumer
There are more than 1,2 Billion subscriptions to sVOD services in the world and
more than 600 million subs
Anglophones
Fast Channels :
Ad supported live content
Gaming :
Conclusion :
The cake can not grow forever
All the streaming services fight for “eyeballs” : consumers screen time
Exemple : Netflix says thzt fortnite is bigger competition than HBO or hulu
Fortnite : 350M users and 3,2 Milliards d’heure de jeu par mois concert travis
scott gros boom
SESSION 2 :
Netflix produces more than it buys now and had to produc it own content and
more locally
Evergreen content : contenu à regarder quand on veut qui fidélise (friends, the
office) permet the limiter le taux d’attrition
2/ Prix
Profitabilité est dure à atteindre :
Lancement de séries très couteux
De gros investissements (marketing, plateforme…)
Content are cash greedy (originals) très couteux quoi
Revenues start sometimes 2 years or more after spendings are made
consumer screen time competition
3/Internationalisation :
International growth anc critical size are crucial because of :
Des coûts fixes de structure
Same platform (technical) for all the market (even if front end and
content differ a bit)
Limits
▪ Culture: need to develop local content to fit the market
specificities
▪ + no sexe scenes or blood in some countries
▪ Legal : in France for example, Media chronology and 20% of
revenues must be invested in European content
▪ Local players competition: lobbying from local players to
prevent international platforms to enter their market (see
session4)
▪ Distribution : need to sign deal with Pay TV provider or
telco that have a strong customer base (Canal+, Orange, Sky...)
and that have set up boxes in every household
Un avenir en afrique ?
4/User experience:
5/Use of data :
Play the humour and friend card with the audience permettant de se
GAFAS
Pay to operators (canal+, orange…)
Device manufactures with their own Operating system
Agggregation apps (Molotov.tv)
smart haut parleur, Tv accesoires, VR…)
Amazon fire Tv
Exemple of ROKU
Easy to use and an aggressive pricing strategy
Ils ont d’ailleurs un modèle complet :
OTT devices Smart TV OS Roku chanel – AVOD
And media activities are more and more important in their revenues
SESSION 4:
Legacy media had to adapt their strategies to the new competition landscapes
More and more OTT and D2C services
M and A deals to reach critical size
Entertainement market used to be fragmented
M and A has besome vital to build scale in a competitive market
Go global:
Vivendi a European entertainement giant a leader in culturen
enterntainement , media and communication
A strategy that seems to convince financial market
That has developed global activities but is stil far from the US giants
Adjust the offer to better fit the clients expectations :
B–
Distribution of svod services :
Pay TV operators now distribute streaming apps
With various commercial models
Conclusion :
Session 5 : cinema
French movies represent on average 50% of the theaters releases in France
Around 300 movies produced in France per year on average
French movies represent 40% of the total numbers of cinema entries
With an average budget of 4,2 m d’euros
Deep dive on theaters :
Canal+ being the main funder of French cinema (even more with the take
over of OCS)
With the rise of the SVOD revenues and new law, platforms financing of
French movies will grow
Conclusion :
Session 6 :
2 types of tv Rights :
- Domestic rights
- International rights
Bataille entre legacy channels and platforms for the sport rights
Launch an OTT platform before another global player enter your market
