B
MX is the usual abbreviation for bicycle
motocross. The ancestor of this acrobatic
activity is the MTB, which means moun-
tain bike. BMX started in the 70s in California
and the first World Championship was held in
1982. The two first Olympic champions (Beijing,
China 2008) are Maris Stromberg and Anne-
Caroline Chausson. Their names are famous in
the world of acrobatic biking.
Professional BMX racer Maris Stromberg was
born on March 10, 1987 in Valmiera, a small town
in Latvia*. He is 1.86m tall and he weighs 90kg.
He has four gold medals in Men’s BMX from his
competitions in 2008: one from the European
Championship, two from the World Championship
and one from the Beijing Olympic Games.
Anne-Caroline Chausson (1.72m, 64kg) is a fantastic
ic athlete and multiple med-
med
allist in MTB and BMX. She is from Dijon, where she was born on October
8, 1977. The number of her medals is impressive: eleven from the European
Championships, nineteen from the World Championships and one from the
Chinese Olympics.

I usually don’t eat much meat, but I really
love Korean barbecue. We call it pulgoki,

beef is marinated in a sauce and cooked
over a hot charcoal grill at the table. The
sauce is what makes it so good. It’s ses-

Coming to America
Hi! I’m Marissa. I’m an American citizen but I come from the Philippines. I was 21 when I immi-
grated to California four years ago. Here are my first impressions of the USA.
Most items in the U.S. are more expensive, often a LOT more expensive.
I paid about $160 for a large flat in the Philippines. In San Francisco, I pay more than $1,000 for
a studio apartment! A movie ticket was only $3 in the Philippines and it is $11 in the US.
The American work environment is different.
My co-workers
o-worke immediately called me Marissa. American people are more direct, we are more formal. I always
said Sir or MMadam. I didn’t want to be disrespectful. They were friendlier than my colleagues in the Philippines.
On the second
s day, I was ten minutes late. My manager explained American people were more punctual, so
he wanted me to be on time every morning.
During
Dur ng the first year, I always looked down to show respect as it is common in the Philippines, but I under-
stoodd itt was
sto wa not well-considered. So I tried to be more confident and to make eye contact when I spoke to
someone,
so
omeonee but that was more difficult than I thought!
You ge
get large portions of food and bottomless drink at the restaurant.
On tthe
he first day, I went to a fast food restaurant. I had a large burger plus a drink. In the Philippines, burgers
are smaller
m
maller and you have to pay more if you want your drink to be refilled. In this restaurant, the burger was
enormous
eno rmous aand I drank three glasses of iced tea at no extra charge!
I d like too know
I’d k more about Europe. Can you tell me about your experience and everyday life in France? Is it dif-
ferent from the Philippines or from the USA?

he word chocolate comes from the Aztec language. The
Aztecs made a drink called Xocoatll from cocoa beans mixed
with cold water, spices and cornmeal*. The Spanish explorer
Cortes brought chocolate from America to Europe. There it became
fashionable: mixed with sugar and vanilla it was drunk warm. The
Dutchman Van Houten extracted cocoa butter from cocoa beans in
1827. Joseph Fry made the first solid chocolate bar in 1847. Daniel
Peter, a Swiss confectioner, invented milk chocolate in the 1870s
and Henri Nestlé developed the process.
The cocoa tree originally comes from the Amazon rainforests.
Brazil, West Africa and Ecuador now produce most of the 1.5 mil-
lion-tonne world cocoa crop*. The beans from one cocoa tree make
500g of chocolate. In Britain people spend an average of £1.50 a
week on chocolate and eat between 8.5 and 9.5 kg a year. But choc-
olate contains a molecule which gives us the same feeling as when
we fall in love…

I only prepared cement, so it was boring and annoying but, after two weeks,
the work rapidly changed and it became interesting.
Zoe: My name is Zoe. I started at the Professional Training Centre last year to be a plumber.
At the beginning, the boys in my class were NOT friendly at all and they made fun of me.
It was also difficult to find a work placement but now, everything is OK.
Nina: My name’s Nina. Last January, I went on a work placement in a supermarket.
Every day I worked in the dairy products department, where it is so cold! Every day,
I put out tons of yogurts, cheese and crème fraiche. I hated that job, really!
When I got back to school, I decided to be a better student.
Jocelyn: I’m Jocelyn, I’m 20 years old. When I was 16, I decided to be a beautician.
I wanted to work in a world of cosmetics, perfume and make-up. In the first week
of my placement, I just cleaned the materials and the salon. The days were VERY long.
Fortunately, on the second week, my placement became interesting.

Gina: I finished at 5:30 every afternoon.
Stan: How many days-off did you have?

and I cleaned them. I changed the water in the vases, I watered the plants. I also answered
the phone and I took orders.

➲ Listen to Rudy and complete the labels with the following words.
Reporter: Hi Rudy. I’m a reporter for the magazine YOUNG WORKERS. I’d like to write
an article about the work placements which are offered to trainees like you. Would you like
to answer my questions, please?
Rudy: Oh! A reporter! OK. Go ahead.
Reporter: I know you had two work placements. Which work placement did you prefer?
Rudy: My favourite work placement was last March at Evans Auto Centre. Yes, I definitely preferred
my second work placement because it was a newer and bigger garage and it was well equipped.
The working conditions were better. I liked the workplace: it was very attractive; Oh yes,
it was a more attractive and cleaner workplace with a tidier workshop. I enjoyed working there.
I had more interesting tasks to do. It was hard work and indeed, the work atmosphere was
more stressful but I learnt a lot, that’s why I’d like to work at Evans Auto Centre after my exams.
Reporter: What about the first work placement? Was it so bad?
Rudy: Well; no, not so bad because I liked the atmosphere. Yes, the work atmosphere was friendlier.
The boss was very nice. He encouraged and helped me, but the working conditions were worse.
Reporter: When was that?
Rudy: It was last January at Priory Garage. It was an older garage. The work place was smaller
and dirtier with a messier workshop. I didn’t like the workshop at all: it was really messy!
Oh yes! What a mess! And ...er... I had to do more boring tasks like cleaning the cars or changing
the tyres. That was not very interesting!
Reporter: Can you give me more details about the tasks you had to do...

Reporter: Hi Jeff. I’m a reporter for the magazine YOUNG WORKERS. I’d like to know more
about young immigrants who come from the Philippines to work in the USA. Would you like
to answer my questions, please?
Jeff: OK. Yes.
Reporter: Thank you, Jeff. So, how old are you and when did you immigrate to North America?
Jeff: Well, I’m 22 years old and I immigrated to the US... er... two years ago..
Reporter: OK. Do you remember it? What were your first impressions when you arrived
in New York City?
Jeff: Yes, of course, I remember it very well. At first, I hated New York! That was in November
and it was colder than in the Philippines! I had never seen so much snow! In the morning,
everything was white! ... brrr... It was very cold! And the city was more polluted than the towns
in the Philippines: the sky was never blue and it was noisier: there was so much traffic!
I needed silence and fresh air.
Reporter: Did you like the shops and the restaurants?
Jeff: Yes, I loved the shops! They are bigger and much nicer! But everything is more expensive
in the USA. I paid $15 for a restaurant dinner here in New York City; it’s only 5 dollars
in the Philippines!

Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand but it is not the biggest city. The largest city is Auckland.
My country is a big island. In fact, New Zealand consists of two islands: North Island and South Island.
There are about 4.3 million people who live in New Zealand; 14% of them are Maori people.
There are two official languages: English and Maori. We pay in New Zealand dollars and we drive on the left.
The number of sheep is impressive compared to the population: there are 60 million sheep in New Zealand!
Our national symbol is the kiwi – the bird, not the fruit – and our national sport is rugby, of course!
