éviter la circulation des copies fautives. Les libraires sont obligés de prêter le

1459. Invention de l'imprimerie.
1486. Berchtold, archevêque de Mayence, premier théoricien de la censure, ordonne
« ...dans l'intérêt de l'imprimerie, pour la protéger contre ses propres abus, que
tout écrit soit revêtu de l'autorisation de l'Université avant d'être imprimé ».
1515. Le concile de Latran reprenant la bulle d'Alexandre VI décrète qu'aucun livre
ne peut être imprimé avant d'avoir été soigneusement examiné et approuvé par
les personnes désignées à cet effet.
1521. François Ier soutient la lutte de l'Église catholique contre la Réforme en ordon
nant que tout livre à imprimer soit préalablement examiné et approuvé par
l'Université, et par la faculté de Théologie.
1543. Parution en France du premier Index de livres défendus.
1559. Première édition de l'Index Librorum Prohibitorum.
